The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Just saw it. I think it was a real good movie, maybe not great, but good. There is a crap ton of difference between the book and the movie. More so than the 1st one I think. I don't think it was a bad thing, some of the stuff in the book just wouldn't translate well to movie goers. I like the fill in on the necromancer story, it does tie things together well with the LoTR story line. As for the dwarves idea on how to kill Smaug WTF REALLY!?!?! He is a ginormass FIRE breathing dragon, what screwed up mind thought that would work?

Still not seen it, but you mean to tell me the bird doesn't tell them and it isn't the Bowman who saves the town?

Saw the movie today. I thought it was pretty excellent. Of course you have to ignore certain parts added to the movie like the female wood elf and some of the citizens of Laketown..

It was the kind of movie that had me surprised at the time when it was over..super long but didn't seem like it.

And Smaug acts like some of congressmen/women.

There's a big difference in talking about Sauron as the Necromancer and having him in the movie. Kinda like that goofball brown wizard. Yea, he's mentioned, but never seen.

The Sauron stuff seems like they're just going to tell how he comes back to power. Seperate from the other story.

Radagast was played down in this one. Not near as cartoonish.

I enjoyed it more than the first one.

Love the LotR trilogy, but they went a little too sappy with the first Hobbit. I know it's a more lighthearted book, but I really get tired of the slow motion frowns, chagrins, and lovie smiles. I thought too, that the LotR trilogy had a very good mix of traditional effects like models, costumes, etc. but the Hobbit relied too much on CGI. No matter how good CGI is, you use too much of it, it ends up looking fake and cartoonish.

Agree - especially with the first part. The first Hobbit movie was either an insane action scene or a tender moment; there was no in between.

Radagast is a bad man. I wouldn't mess with him. Based on the books at least.

I agree, the biggest issue I've had with both films is the CGI. I really loved the LOTR trilogy because the Orcs actually looked real.

I thought Hobbit 2 was pretty awesome. CGI is pretty lame..and when I say CGI I mean Orc wolf things are terribad.

I enjoyed Legolas's "nobody makes me bleed my own blood" look.

Saw it in 3D last night. Loved it. Thought the 3D added a lot to the overall experience of the movie. Smaug was fantastic. I'm not sure I liked the departure from the book in the escape from the Wood Elves and the sped up timeline to get to the hidden entrance, but I can see how that part of the plot is being used to set up future events. Overall one of the better and more enjoyable movie watching experiences.

Why does Peter Jackson make these movies so long? I usually have to find a point in these movies to get up and take a break.

I saw the first one in 3D but saw this one in 2D. I didn't think the 3D was really worth the extra cash.

I've seen exactly 2 movies in my life that I thought the 3D was worth the price, The Polar Express in IMAX and Avatar. Besides those, I have not felt that 3D was necessary for anything else I've watched.

I've thoroughly enjoyed both the lotr and hobbit movies. I'm a huge lotr/tolkien nerd though. I've read everything from the silmarillion and children of hurin and of course the hobbit and lotr.

For what they are the movies have been really good. Jackson did change some things like taking out Tom Bombadil completely but he did stick to the main themes of the books for the most part.

I bought the extended LOTR set on DVD and never made it all the way through Fellowship.

Tried to watch Unexpected Journey the other day but fell asleep halfway through. It was good but just too long, especially for a story I'm already familiar with.

To this day I am mad at Jackson for leaving out the Scouring of the Shire from RotK.

I let most things go, but this one was just inexplicable. It made the ending just seem off. He rushed the ending to begin with and skipping such an important part just made it all the more confusing.

I was mad they left out the Tom Bombadil portion of the FOTR.

Finally convinced myself I could watch the Desolation and I was very surprised. Easily the best work Jackson has done with the Tolkien work to date. (Spoilers coming)The Tauriel stuff was awkward, but it wasn't as awful as I feared. Not a fan of having Orcs involved, it was only goblins, but whatever. The Sauron (The Necromancer) story is all about him just starting to build his empire, which is technically accurate, and we don't fully know what Gandalf went off to do anyway.

There's only one problem. Jackson now has roughly 3 hours to include (more spoilers coming) the killing of Smaug, divvying up the gold, the Battle of Five Armies and the return to the Shire. A lot to do in a very little time.

That said, the third movie should be amazing.

Although I agree that DOS was better than the first, the LOR series, particularly Fellowship and The Return of the King, were far better films IMO.
