They were probably the two that strayed furthest from Tolkien.
I think we have two different criteria for judging these films. I'm not a stickler for adhering perfectly to the word of Tolkien. I thought the LOTR movies took some liberties with the material but they were just well made films from a technical standpoint. I came away from TDOS with a feeling that some parts of the movie were just not well made. The barrel scene in particular. What was up with that 90s vhs cam corder footage of going down the river in s barrel? The budget is hundreds of millions of dollars and we get that? And the elves were just kind of fast moving blobs of CGI. Don't get me wrong, I was still entertained, and I thought it was better than the first Hobbit movie, but that scene in particular made me question the quality of the film making.
