The Hunting Thread

I'm giving up bow hunting, missed the same buck three tim3s the other year.

I've never turkey hunted. I think I will give it a try this year

It's a blast, I like it better than deer hunting at times. Since it will be your first time, I would get out and scout and find out where they are typically pitching out in the morning and get in real early and stalk them. Or get a friend who can call good.

listen for them to go to roost and/or use an owl call at night and find them as they're going to bed. Much easier to get up behind them in the morning

You see alot of things turkey hunting, its a cool time of year to be in the woods.

I've heard once you pick up turkey hunting deer hunting really drops on the list.

Just depends, I'm always striving to shoot a bigger buck so that really hasn't happened for me. But you get to do alot more moving.

Ok - on the panther thing. My brother in law is one of those guys that always has some story about something. He's a talker and some of it sounds like bs. HOWEVER, every story that he has ever told has turned out to be true. He's just one of those guys - knows everything about everything and knows every "buddy of mine" east of the Mississippi. About five years ago he was walking into his tree stand in Rhea County with his headlamp on. He saw something ahead laying down in the logging road. As he approached, it casually got up and wandered off into the woods. It looked back at him and it was a huge black panther. Needless to say my bro in law was pretty freaked out for awhile. I always feel a little nervous going into the woods or coming out of the woods in the dark over there in Rhea County. My bro in law has seen two panthers down there.

Ok - I got one rabbit hunt in before the end of the season. Went to Spring City and hunted a farm that obviously had not been hunted for rabbits in a long time. We shot 5 biguns. My dog ran for about 30 minutes and then called it a day. Pu$$. I shouldn't have fed him that Hardees biscuit before we hit the field. The other eight dogs ran all day and wanted more. A good pack of small beagles. The scent was bad that day and they had a hard time. I had to get into the stickers some and almost got just completely caught by the stickers suspended in the air. The next day, my buddies went back and hunted the same place. The scent was much better and they killed 9 biguns.

Anybody hunt with a weird caliber rifle? By weird, I mean not that common. I've got a .358 and a 250/300 savage.

Yes but my 7mm kicks harder - I guess because it is smaller. I have some 250 grain rounds for it. It is a beautiful gun.
