Don't know how many of you have looked at the polls, but currently Boise State sits at #5 in USA Today and the Harris Poll - 2/3 of the formula to determine the BCS title game participants. As of now Texas and three SEC teams are ahead of them.

Barring an epic letdown, Boise State is not getting beat. Two of the three SEC teams are going to lose at least once (if not all 3). It stands to reason that OU can beat Texas.

I think we're looking at a very good chance that Boise State is playing in the BCS title game this year. If not, be prepared for all heck to break lose if they get passed up by a 1 loss team.

Thoughts?

They'll get passed up by one of the many 1-loss teams that would beat the hell out of them. Send them to another BCS bowl against a great opponent so they can be humiliated.

Look at Boise's strength of schedule, from Barnhart's column today. He got these rankings from CBS or something, but they should be good enough to give you an idea:

Oregon—21
Tulsa—67
Fresno State—69
La. Tech–76
Hawaii—79
Bowling Green—80
Idaho—83
Nevada—89
New Mexico State—103
San Jose State—107
Utah State—114
Miami (Ohio)—118

Plus they play a I-AA team. So the only opponent they play all year who's ranked better than about 70th is Oregon. No way the voters will put them in over a one-loss SEC or Big 12 or Pac 10 champion. The only way Boise gets in the title game is if all the usual suspects end up with two losses.

Everyone loves a Cinderella story, especially in sports. We love to see the underdog prevail. It brings us to tears when the little guy beats the big guy.

But having said all that you have to understand that, barring a total collapse of the major conferences, there is no way—at least no logical way–that No. 5 Boise State can play for the national championship.

But using the ever popular transitive property of college football, which the BCS disaster promotes, BSU has essentially beaten Cal, who was in the top 5 for a week. Hence, they've beaten a top 5 team and they beat OU a few years ago. No brainer.

The best thing that could happen for college football would be for Boise to get into the title game based upon the stupid formula, and then get absolutely pantsed by Texas or Florida or somebody. Maybe then we could finally move towards a playoff and away from a beauty pageant.

The old system was better than the crap we have now.

Agreed, save UF pantsing another shoddy title game participant.

Well, that would suck. I would doubtless be rooting for Boise in that matchup. Dunno that I'm selfless enough to put the disembodied greater good of college football above my own personal hatred.

I know for damn sure I'm not. I want nothing but misfortune for them until the playing field is leveled.

If Houston goes undefeated, they will make the biggest case ever for a chance for a non bcs team to make the championship, Boise has NOOOOO shot!

Agreed

Just out of curiosity, whom would one root for if (gasp, puke) the BCS chose the (probable) winner and loser of the SECCG (Bama and UF) in a rematch for the NC ?

I cringe at the thought of it but it is not an impossible scenario.

No it won't. No one would care much about this other than a congressman from Idaho who will try to get legislation passed cause his team got left out...

your guys wish for a playoff system wont ever come unless you figure out a way for the schools (all the ones that participate) to make more money than they do in the current system

And the part that's making it a beauty pagent more than anything is the weekly polls

I really don't think that would do it.

Not if it was just 1 year anyways. 5-6 years in a row of a mid-major getting into a NC game, and them winning just one of those would cause the BCS conferences to rethink how they do things.

Of course, this will never happen, so it's a wash.

Except for the fact that a 16 team playoff could make more money than any other proposed or current system.

Right....cause it made so much sense for a number 1 michigan team to have to play a number 8 Washington St team rather than the number 2 team.

Or for a Florida St. to beat UF, but them to play again two games later and by splitting the year's series 1-1, UF to be declared champion

The old system sucked, but it's not like the new one is so much better.

for 16 teams; the problem is look how many are currently making money on this system; you can't just cut the rest of the -what's it 32 bowl teams now? - out now and say "sorry"

the problem is making money for all the schools, not which would get more viewership

and show me where that idea has been proven other than "well more people would watch since they want a playoff" or "more people would watch since there's less college football on"

it's the bowl game's payout, it's the sponsorship payout, it's the television deal w/ the bowl game's payout

EDIT: it's 52 other school teams currently

It's not, but at least it's a little better. you're at least getting a 1 and 2 and giving a 2 a chance instead of 1 vs 8 or unranked and 2 pretty much watches from the side

they said when they made this that it wouldnt be perfect, but that it would be a step in the direction of improvement
