The Iraq War has cost 3 trillion dollars

Was the Iraq War worth the cost (3 trillion)?

No one has discussed that the majority of Iraqi's (65%) are Shiite Muslims, as are the majority of Iranians (90%). In the future, they are natural allies.

The Shiites of Iran and Iraq will become the dominant force in the region and will be Israel's largest enemy. Still have trouble understanding how this was in the U.S. national interest.....
So, the Italians, French, Spanish, Mexicans, Brazilians, Columbians, Peruvians, Argentinians, and Panamanians are all natural allies? After all, they are all largely Catholic...

So you think politics with respect to religion in the Middle East, is comparable to politics with respect to religion in South America or Europe? The situation in the Middle East is unique, there's no other place in the world like it with respect to politics and religion.

Most of the Iraqi's are incredibly fed up with foreign insurgents. They would love nothing more than to see the foreign Sunnis, Shia, and Wahabbis take their ball and go home.

The only Iraqi group that has any sort of presence in the country at the same time continuing connections with Iran is Jaish al-Mahdi. Even so, about 2/3 of JAM are now completely non-violent, and the powers that be in Iraq are and will continue to force Moqtada al-Sadr to remain in exile in Iran.

That doesn't change the facts. That is 65% of Iraqi's are Shiites and 90% of Iranians. IMO it will be only a matter of time before they are allies. They are both natural enemies of Israel. Again I cant see how a Shiite controlled Iraq would be in the U.S. interest.

So, if Iraq was controlled by Sunni, then you would not have to worry???

Funny, last time I checked, Syria was largely Sunni. Are they not bedfellows with Iran???

Feel free to continue grasping for straws in your quest against the war in Iraq.

So your saying the Sunni and Shea are bedfellows? Funny because in Iraq they war and try to kill each other for control of the country.

Syria and Iran are only "bedfellows" to the degree they are both Muslim countries that hate Israel and the U.S.A. IMO there will be a much closer union between Iran and Iraq who are not only Muslim countries but also predominitely Shiite Muslim.

Almost all muslim countries hate Israel, so yeah if Iraq was predominately a shiite country it would only help with respect to Iran, not with Israel. That's a given.

Shia.

And, I am going to have to categorically disagree with your opinion.

I am not sure what you consider as "almost all Muslim countries", however, while I would say the majority are implicitly anti-Zionist (very few are explicit in this sentiment), there are certainly power-brokers in the Arab world who remain neutral in the conflict (Jordan, Kuwait, the House of Saud, the U.A.E., Turkey, the Lebanese government, and Egypt.)

Aside from the House of Saud (who simply remain neutral on the subject due to their ties to the U.S.), can you draw some conclusions about the countries I named? Once you have drawn that conclusion, feel free to apply it to the state we are ardently trying to establish in Iraq.

Feel free to take as long as you like deliberating the question and formulating your answer

IMO those countries have not already joined forces with the rest of the Arab world against Israel is because they dont want a war with the U.S.

My opinion would be that they are either countries that are very affluent and educated, or have representative governments, or both.

Considering that we are assuring that Iraqi schools teach more than just the Koran and we are working to establish a representative and open government in Iraq, I would predict that Iraq will not in any way be allied with Iran in 10 years and on (unless the youth of Iran finally make a stand and overthrow the Ayatollah.)

From what I've read countries like Saudi Arabia have a fragile hold of their country and are not that popular.

Abdullah has a pretty firm grip on the Saudis.

The Lebanese Government basically has no control in the southern region of Lebanon, though.

The $3 Trillion is a numerical play on the minds of people who don't care to look deeper. It is a figure of the total defense budget, not just the action in Iraq, and , based on a percentage of the GDP, is lower than any time since WW2 with the exception of the few years in the 90's when congress got rid of a few Tank Divisions and naval ships and the world was generally peaceful.

A Trillion sounds like alot, until you look at the grand scheme of things.

A few components of the $3 trillion figure:

1. Includes both Afghanistan and Iraq
2. Doesn't count for costs incurred if we didn't go into Iraq. About 60% (or something like that) of the troops were being used in containment. In otherwords, a more accurate view would be net additional direct military costs of Iraq.
3. Assumes an oil price premium resulting from Iraq and projects that impact on other costs in the economy.
4. Assumes lost earnings from soldiers killed or wounded - projects that number through assumed normal life of said soldiers.
5. Assumes same level of military activity for some # of years going forward.

It includes many other similar estimates. One issue with the assumptions is that it doesn't consider what those costs would be if we had not gone in.

No doubt Iraq has been incredibly expensive but $3 trillion is a question # based on many assumptions that may or may not be true.
