Willie Mays and Josh Hamilton are the only two players in MLB history with a .400 batting average and at least 17 homers in their team's first 34 games
I agree, but Hamilton is six years younger and has played a whole lot less baseball than A-Rod, thus less wear and tear. A-Rod has had an amazing career and when you compare his numbers with Hamilton, you can see why he got he contract that he did even though no baseball player is worth that much money, imo.
A-Rod is 36 and Hamilton is 30. A-Rod has 160+ more HRs than Hamilton has career RBIs for reference of how disparaging their numbers are to date. Hamilton has never hit more than 32 HRs in a single season, A-Rod has hit 32+ HRs 12 times. A-Rod has a career .386 OBP versus .371 for Hamilton. Even if Hamilton averages his career high of 32 HRs over the next five years he will only flirt with 300 HRs for his career while A-Rod sits now with 634. In the three years that A-Rod played in Texas he hit 156 HRs versus 136 HRs for Hamilton over the span of his entire six-year career.
