I’ve always been told this is, was, and likely always will be a myth. Having a record certainly affects your ability to join.@volfanbill, do judges in your recruiting territory still offer minor offenders the option of joining the military? Are they part of your network?
The son of my wife’s oldest sister shot a snow goose in Idaho when he was in his late teens. He asked the judge to allow him to join the military. A plea deal was struck. He joined the Marines, served 4 years, and was honorably discharged. His record should be expunged.
The judge likely dropped or reduced the charges knowing the guy wanted to join. That’s my best (and totally uneducated) guess. But he can’t mandate join or jail. Misdemeanors can be worked around, but not if they’re open. Thanks for the straight skinny, bill. Maybe the nephew avoided formal charges being filed. I do not doubt that he shot a snow goose. I do not doubt that he was reported for doing so (his step father). He did serve in the Marines, completing his duty just before 9/11.
