The last SEC player to win the Heisman?

That is really my point as well. Troy Smith was not the best player in college football last year. Darren McFadden was. Darren McFadden is the best player in college football again this year, but because of Arkansas' record, he will likely get shafted.

The Heisman winner, more often than not, has been the MVP on a team that goes undefeated or plays for the National Championship. The precedent says that it is the best player that plays for the team with the best record.

I agree but again Darren McFadden isn't the best either. He deserves mention of course, as well as several others... but by sheer playing ability and numbers racked up... NO ONE can compete with the numbers Tebow has put up this season. Hell name a senior that's done close to what Tebow has. But then again college footb all is about ass crooked as the mafia these days.

Definitely...I also think Rex got the sophmore shaft and should have gotten it over Crouch.

Rex Grossman had way better numbers than anyone in college football that year and I can remember being floored when they didn't call his name. I guess him being a sophomore is what killed his chances. Suddenly, being a sophomore doesn't hurt your chances anymore. The whole nation has gone batty over Tebow, except for June Jones that is. I will say that Grossman got the shaft and with no vaseline either.

Tebow probably had the better season, but as a sophomore the voters will think he'll have other chances. This year's top RB is McFadden, and I think he'll get it because this is most likely his last year.

- Either way I don't see anyone outside the SEC as being close.

Getting back to 1997, here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry:

During his Heisman-winning junior year, he made an acrobatic one-handed sideline interception against the Michigan State Spartans. Woodson had two interceptions in the game.[6] In a game against Ohio State, he returned a punt for a touchdown, made an interception in the end-zone, and had a 37-yard reception that led to Michigan's only offensive touchdown of the game. The win lifted Michigan to the Rose Bowl.[7]

Manning was great, but the voters, for once, had a shot at voting in a defensive player, and they did. It wasn't a total travisty.

On the contrary... if you're gonna name the best RB in college football it'd have to be the guy from UCF. Now I know the strength of comference arguement... but he's about tos et the single season rushing mark in college football... McFadden isn't close. McFadden has had one great game at the expense of LSUs defense... not sure that really makes him a Heisman candidate. But i'd like to see it stay in the SEC regardless.

No offense to Kevin Smith of UCF, but McFadden is the best running back in the country.

Alabama, USCe, LSU and the list goes on

Tulsa was the second best team in the conference to UCF. That should tell you all you need to know about the opposing defenses he saw. Then you can stop this silly charade about someone from UCF having a better season.

Sanders sat the record in 11 games...He will have played 14.

I agree which is why I made the comment about strength of conference... but the Heisman is supposed to be unbiased to this... it's supposed to be based on accomplishments... which is why I also said there's no comparing Brennon to Tebow. Sophomore or not... Tebow's accomplishments (if there's any justice) can't be over looked which makes everyone else a distant 2nd to him.
I can't believe i'm argueing my point for a Gator. :dunno:

McFadden is the best college football player this year... but he probably won't win.

Hasn't winning the Heisman largely been a kiss-of-death for players wishing to succeed in the NFL? I can't remember all the names offhand, but I seem to recall an alarmingly high percentage of Heisman winners don't amount to much. (Not saying winning the Heisman is the cause, mind you, just that the selection process sort of leads to that outcome.)

It's also been a jinx in bowl games for the winner with the exception of a few.

Any individual CFB award that doesn't consider the level of competition should be broken into small enough pieces so as to be flushed down an average toilet.

It's already been said, but it should go to McFadden this year. He is the best player that I have seen play. But alas, he is on an average Arkansas team and won't get the votes. You have to be in a big market region any more to get it, unless you have a network like ABC/ESPN pushing you.

If it makes anybody feel better, Timmy won the Maxwell award, which is usually given to the runner-up in the Heisman race

Walter Payton :p

Sweetness IMO is the greatest runner to ever play the game.Barry Sanders is a VERY close second.

I also agree with BPV on Herschel.I've watched a lot of players since that guy left Georgia, but I don't believe I've ever seen anybody more dominant on the college level.
