For me it is. This is not going to be a performace car, just a reliable driver. Rear drums work really well when combined with front disks. The fronts provide about 75% of your braking. Rear disks give you about a 5-10% improvement over drums on a non track car. So for such a small gain, it isn't worth the extra cash for me.This is not correct!

I understand your rational for your car! I've made the same choices before. For me it is. This is not going to be a performace car, just a reliable driver. I gotcha. There is also the ease of replacing pads vs shoes that I had to consider. But this car isn't going to ever see more than a few hundred miles a year while I own it so the shoes should last me many years. I did seriously consider the 4 wheel kit, but it was nearly double the cost of the front only kit and I want to keep my wife on board with this project. Which means shaving some $$ where I can. I have to save every little bit to justify the crate engine. I would just find a suitable engine and rebuild, but finding a decent machine shop is difficult and the cost of machine work head work, and all new pistons, rings, bearings, cam, etc is pretty close to the cost of a crate engine. I called a buddy of mine who is into drag racing and he said just go with the crate engine. He said he is pretty done with building engines unless it is something he wants a specific set of parts on.I understand your rational for your car! I've made the same choices before.
However, I worked for Bendix brake for 7 years and Wagner brake for 15 yrs and have been ASE certified in brake and chassis since '76. Rear disc weigh 15-20% less than drum setup. I can't think of any autos since 2000 that don't have 4w disc. Especially over time, braking efficiency is much greater with disc as drum systems tend to wear at a different rate from side to side.
I have not ordered it yet. I will be going with either a 289 or 302. This will be a mild engine. 300 HP or less. I will either grab one from Summit or S&J Engines. I have used S&J in the past for a Jeep engine and it was a really good engine.Happy Wife, Happy Life
Where did U order crate engine?? What CID did U go with??
