What made him legendary? (No disrespect. Im genuinely curious). Was he a former player? Coach? Super fan/booster? Who was he to UT?

Gus Manning was as much a Tennessee tradition as the school colors, between him and Haywood Harris, they encompassed the modern history of all things Tennessee. He was a fixture in Neyland Stadium for so long, you knew it was a Tennessee game when you saw that cigar.

I was at that Clemson game and UT was simply lining up to kick the extra point to tie the game...The center snap (was good) went thru Holloway's hands and he picked up the ball and just heaved it to the endzone with Clemson defenders hanging all over him. I looked down and saw Gus jumping up and down...Great game

Gus Manning is arguably the greatest Vol For Life over ANYONE.....for his dedication to Tennessee Athletics over multiple decades. There would be no UT, the way we have known it, without Gus Manning and his contributions, I mean this. He enbodied what it means to live, eat, breathe Tennessee Football and Tennessee in general.

Name me one other person that exemplifies this more than Gus Manning did

Obituaries in Knoxville, TN | Knoxville News Sentinel

I have known the Mannings for well over a half-century. One of my classmates from the first day of first grade was his "special niece" Kathy listed as such in his obit. She and I went to school together from then through UT itself. Her dad was Gus's brother, J.T. "Little Man" Manning, who was a star football player at KCHS and later at Knoxville High School in the 1930s.

Godspeed, "Uncle Gus" and Go Vols!

I'm going to break out my Vols dress shirt and UT tie for Mass this Sunday in Gus's memory.

Gus was a fixture for so many years. I’m 52 and can remember my grandfather talking about him, as they were friends. I remember talking with Gus at some function. I couldn’t even tell you what the function was, but I remember taking to Gus.

Listening to him with Haywood on The Locker Room was a treat.

99! Wow, what a life.
