If 5 is a good number, then we're in good shape since we have 6 ('38, '40, '51, '67, '98).

To consider yourself among the historical elite, 5 would be a good number. I can't think of a school, other than Miami, who has that number of National Championships that I wouldn't consider a historical power.
Since 1936, NCAA Football Championships (either AP or Coaches):

Historical Elite
Notre Dame - 8
Oklahoma - 7
USC - 7
Alabama - 7
Nebraska - 5
Ohio State - 5
Miami - 5

The Others With Two Or More:
Texas - 4
Minnesota - 4
Pittsburgh - 2
Army - 2
Michigan - 2
Tennessee - 2
Michigan St - 2
LSU - 2
Penn State - 2
FSU - 2

I'm talking consensus National Titles. I don't subscribe to the Tuscaloosan Theory of Math.

The list bears out my point. There's no debate that everyone, except Miami, with 5+ titles is part of the historical elite in college football. A case can be made for some teams with less than 5, but none of them has the cache of those with 5+.

It enlightened me as well. Looking at the list, Tennessee is tied for 5th among all the other schools with 2 NCAA Football Championships. That is pretty good in my simple mind. I suspect it is just what an individuals definition of "elite" actually is.

Absolutely. People define success differently.

YEAH!!! GET'EM HAT!!!!TN's history is absolutely something to be proud of, I know I am. However, it is just that.....history. the fact is, TN is not relevant in the discussion of college football today. the program has taken a big step back. anyone who disputes that needs to take the orange glasses off. that is not to say the ship will not be righted, but I am afraid it will get worse before it gets better. hope I am wrong.

until the vols start playing tough, fundamentally sound football, I guess I'll just have to be "negative."

Notice how I managed to refer to negative posts without labelling anybody a NegaVol a Fulmerite or any of those other idiotic terms? I didn't say there was anything wrong with a negative post, just that couching them with "I hope I'm wrong" has become a familiar cop out.

If that's all it takes to run somebody off, they don't need to be here. All I did was point out how often I've been seeing a particular phrase.

What the heck are you talking about Hat? You know damn well that the Tuscaloosan Theory of Math is the only observence of National Championship Relativity since 1941.........I mean 1940. :biggrin2:

I meant to say "1942" and "1941", respectively

I have mentioned this before, but my discontent stems from when Stevie left Fla. UT's only natural predator was gone. Instead of taking advantage of the situation, UT really fell off of the national stage.

This is a good point. After winning the NC in 98 and Spurrier leaving Florida in 01, the expectation was that UT would become the dominant program in the SEC.

Instead of UT moving from #2 to the #1 program in the SEC, UT lost repeated SEC championship games to LSU and Auburn, and lost the SEC east multiple times to GA, making UT the #4 program in the SEC during that time.

Now with Spurrier back at SC, and Meyer at Florida, who most believe to be a very good coach, UT could potentially slip even further.
