14 Characteristics of cult leaders - PsychMechanics
It can be reasonably argued that Donald Trump embodies 13 of these 14 characteristics.
1) They're narcissistic.
Donald Trump is always describing himself as "the best" or "the most" ... His speeches primarily involve self-promotion, attacking his perceived enemies or playing the victim card.
2) They're charismatic.
Donald Trump was the host of a successful prime time game show for a reason. He does have an on camera ease. He is never at a loss for words, even though he may be inarticulate at times.
3) They're dominant.
Donald Trump's shtick heavily involves personally insulting anyone who either criticizes him or challenges him. These insults often expose a cognitive dissonance. Trump will frequently call people fat, when the same can obviously be said about him as well.
4) They demand obedience
Donald Trump will disparage any fellow Republican who criticizes him, as being a "RINO," with no other reason cited, other than their criticism of him.
5) They claim to have supernatural powers
This is the one that doesn't apply to Trump, although, he often does make such boasts as "I, and I alone can save this country." He claims to have powers that others don't, but not of the supernatural variety.
6) They're arrogant and boastful.
Donald Trump spends more time boasting, than any public figure since Muhammed Ali. Even his diehard fanboys will concede that he is arrogant.
7) They're sociopaths/psychopaths.
A lack of empathy is the hallmark of a sociopath. Donald Trump does not possess a shred of empathy for others. He is willing and eager to tell malicious lies which damage the reputations and lead to the harassment of completely innocent people, such as the Fulton County pollster workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Shaye Moss, simply because these lies advanced his narrative that the 2020 Presidential Election had been rigged against him. No consideration was ever given to the veracity of his claims, or to how his lies might affect the lives of those two people.
8) They're delusional.
Whether it's believing that COVID would "magically disappear" in April of 2020, or believing that he still had a chance to retain the presidency on January 6, 2021 ... Donald Trump can talk himself into anything. He is not grounded in reality, or even in rational thought ... much less well-versed in the United States Constitution and federal law.
9) They're persuasive
Donald Trump is effective at identifying deep-rooted resentments of the middle-aged to elderly, lower class, uneducated white voters ... and tapping into their fears and concerns about the future. He gives them hope for a return to the good ol' days when being gay was something to be ashamed of, and blacks "knew their place" in society.
10) They're authoritative and controlling.
While President, Donald Trump loved to say that the mainstream media was "the enemy of the people." What he really meant, was that the media was his enemy, because they fact-check his claims, and investigate his conflicts of interest. However, in the mind of someone who is as controlling as Trump, where he sees an enemy, his followers should see one too. That is a control freak.
11) They're exploitative.
Donald Trump is primarily a Republican, because they are the party of the uneducated, and therefore, easier to manipulate. His shtick would never work with Democrats, and he knows it. If you are old and poor, and think that Donald Trump would be caught dead socializing with you? Then you are more naive than any adult person ever should be.
12) They're underdogs.
Donald Trump loves to embrace the role of the put-upon victim. All we hear, during every investigation and after every indictment, is how Trump is a victim of a weaponized Department of Justice, the biased media, or the deep state. There is never any accountability shown or any responsibility taken for any of his actions. The mission of every investigative body is always labeled a "witch hunt," and every indictment or impeachment is always labeled a "hoax." It's such an old and boring routine by now ... but it's all he knows.
13) They're intolerant of criticism
Donald Trump is a very thin-skinned person. Although he loves to hold up the First Amendment as a shield for himself, while President, he threatened to have the broadcast licenses of NBC and CNN pulled, just because they had aired stories which were critical of his policies.
14) They're visionaries.
While running for President in 2016, Trump not only claimed that he would completely eliminate the debt, but he also claimed that he knew more than "his generals," about how to defeat ISIS. He has consistently projected the sentiment that, "I and I alone can fix it."
