The Memphis Postgame Report

Well, I'm not making excuses for him. I just feel like less than 50 games into one's tenure is too early to draw the conclusion that they can't hack it, especially when that coach has a 27-19 record and a 2nd place finish in his only full season.

Coach K was 27-30 after two seasons at Duke. John Calipari was 27-32 after two seasons at UMASS. Tom Crean was 20-38 after two seasons at Marquette, and 16-46 after two seasons at Indiana. These are three of the most successful coaches in the country today, and they all three had lousy to average records in a similar time period to Martin's time at Tennessee. I'm sure they had fans bail out early on too. Hopefully, if Martin can take his lumps early and learn from them, he can do the same. If not, he will be replaced.

There are plenty of coaches that came in and built programs after rough starts, and maybe that is where cuonzo is headed. But he got here with a solid fan base and a program reputation that had expectations of making the tourney and being able to make some noise nationally. Yes, Pearl was run out and left a brief cloud over the program, but cuonzo is still starting 3 players left behind (and should be 4) so either it wasn't a trash roster he inherited or he can't get anyone better.

Take the PG position as one example. Did cuonzo have any recruits at his previous job that he could tap into and bring to UT? And while there is a difference in recruiting to mizz st and UT, at least we'd have a guy that fit cuzono's "talent eye" and not be excited about a walk on as a backup.

We need a 14-4 type run, not a 10-8 type run.

To be fair, the same thing can be said about Kentucky. If UK goes 10-8 in SEC play they would be just as much on the wrong side of the bubble as UT would be going 10-8.

If UK finishes 19-12 they would probably get in, even though they wouldn't deserve it, on name recognition/NCAA knowing they will sell tickets. UT does not have that luxury.

Tom Crean arrived at Indiana with a better fanbase and program reputation with high expectations than Tennessee can ever hope for. Same for John Beilein at Michigan. IU also had the NCAA cloud over their head as well. It took Crean 4 years to make the tournament and after three full seasons, he had one less win than Martin has after less than a season and a half. I'm just suggesting that we let it play out for more than 47 games before we start deeming him a total loss. As evidenced at some other schools, it's not necessarily an overnight success.

Maybe. Maybe not. But my point is still valid. UT (and UK) needing a strong run in conference play is as much a statement about the current strength of SEC basketball as it is a statement about UT's current resume. 8 conference losses probably means you lost to someone that is not very good.

Tom Crean had been to multiple NCAA Tourneys prior to arriving in Bloomington, including a Final Four.

Cuonzo had coached in the tournament you get in when you don't make the NIT field.

Crean was a proven winner in a dumpster fire of a proud program. Cuonzo was in a much much better situation entering UT but he comes in with little experience.

Beilein had been to the tourney multiple times and took Michigan there his second year on the job.

I'm not deeming cuonzo a total loss, he's just an averagle coach that got the opportunity of a lifetime at UT. He should have never even been qualified for the job in the first place. We have a coach clearly in the learning curve of being a coach. And it appears that curve is getting longer and longer. Cuonzo may turn out to be a fine coach - I just don't believe UT was or is a good fit for him to learn how to be a big time coach.

Now, with that said, eventhough we lost Friday night I was proud the boys didn't quit. At about the 12 min mark it looked for the world like they were queueing up a quit - heads down, no hustle, busted plays....but they regrouped and played hard. This same team last season would have quit. At least he has them playing to the end now.

Your last sentence seems to concede there is some level of improvement. Isn't that what we want?

I had a feeling you would bring up Crean's past success as a reason to dissuade me from using him. At Marquette, he was 30-28 in his first two seasons. Beilein was 31-29 at WVU and 31-36 after two seasons at Michigan.

You are labeling Martin an average coach who is learning on the job, how to coach at a high level. At some point though, Crean and Beilein were average coaches learning to become better than average. Obviously, if Tennessee could have done better than Martin, they would have. There was such a cloud of uncertainty with the NCAA, that no one else wanted the job. In addition, we were scheduled to lose our two best players to the draft, and our eventual team leader, Maymon, was considered a lazy, entitled diva.

Surely you don't believe Martin was our first call when Pearl was fired.

We can certainly agree that cuonzo is our backup backup prom date.

Ditto

My backup backup prom date ended up looking like Kate upon. My back kinda like Ashley Olsen, and my first choice like Lindsey Lohan.

Is your drift completely dillusional?

Why would your third choice be the best of the three? The first is a tramp, the second is plain nasty, and the last is the best? Weird.

Lindsey Lohan the best of the 3?

Now I see why we don't see eye to eye lol.

Lohan=Rosie

Your post said your first choice was Lohan?

First Choice Lohan = no
Second Choice Olsen = no
Last Choice Upton = yes

Easily the best of the three was your last. Not sure how that relates to cuonzo, he's no Upton.

Lol I meant you never know how they're gonna turn out. Sometimes after 3 years the attractive first choice is no longer appealing, and what was your third choice now looks the best out of the 3

It was just a way for me to mention Kate upon, anytime I can do that I try to.

Man, that was a convoluted analogy...there should be some Upton pics just for reference.

You can post pics from mobile. Btw thanks for that conversation, it was weird and entertaining.

I've tried, but have no clue how.

Gotta break out a little HTML. easiest way to do it is look at a picture that someone has posted and see how it's coded and then just do that. For pics that are online its url to your picture. except use [ and ] instead of < and >
