The more I listen to Coach Sal the more I realize

I agree...and some posters on here were worried because he hasn't been a DC in the SEC before! Good grief! The guy has been coaching for a long time. I think UT is in good hands. I would be highly shocked if you don't see a better tackling team as well.

That Justin Wilcox was way in over his head here at Tennessee. This is the first time in a long time that I've been this excited about a coach. Sal is the real deal, and I CAN'T WAIT to see the product on the field!!

Go Vols!

I know very little about this topic and don't claim to know much but I have always heard that Justin's defense was a gimmic defense to disquise less talented
defensive players. Boise State

Wilcox seemed pretty lax. I've seen Sal getting in players faces a couple times in the videos. More than once it was Jordan Williams, lol.

Just curious, what makes you say that Wilcox was in over his head here? Just wondering what Sunseri has done to make you think that. Honest question

Spring optimism.

I'm not discounting any of the work that Sunseri has done while he's here, b/c honestly, I am very optimistic about him as well.

However, at this point, all he's proven is how he runs a practice. I'd like to see his D in action for a few games--especially against UF--before I proclaim him far and away a better DC.

Wilcox's "Bend don't break" attitude doesn't win titles in the SEC... I really like Sal and I think he's gonna get this D back on track. I always hated how Wilcox made the DB's give a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and short. You're pretty much begging the QB to throw an out pass for the first down. Sal has them lining up close jamming up WR's and getting physical. That's what I like to see. JMO

I am very excited about Sal. I like his intensity. YOu can see it in the interviews, the videos of practice and the pictures from practice. I think he is going to get after these guys and it is going to translate into a very disciplined and aggressive defense. We may not be the best defense in the SEC, but I do believe the days of consistent missed tackles and consistent defensive blown coverages, like last year, may be over. I totally agree with the OP, the more that I see of Sal, the more excited that I am.

Yeah the "bend don't break" attitude you described would have worked a lot better if we had a consistent offense. That's essentially what the Colts did when they were winning 12 games a year and the Super Bowl.

I see Sal as more of an old fashioned coach that wants his d to go out, swarm to the ball, and roll heads.. I see Wilcox as a more cerebral coach that may have been a little more innovative in new age scheme, but maybe not what our team needed as far as a defensive motivator who the players respect fully and will trust as much as they should in crunch time. I'm glad we have Sal, but I think Justin will do just fine in the future.

Dawg, you may not have seen them, but I have posted in several places that my biggest Christmas present this year was Wilcox leaving!!! Boise State (e.t. al) just aren't in the same league defensively as the SEC. Wilcox is STILL wondering what hit him.

The Colts D pretty much sucked. I'd rather our D be great and offense be behind a little. It's easier to shut down opponents than to outscore them.

We don't have Peyton Manning any more either. Would help if we did

Im also very excited about Sal. But lets not forget our defense ranked 28th nationally overall last season. Also if we had some resemblance of an offense last year our D might have been ranked higher. I think Wilcox did a fairly good job given our lack of depth on defense and our incapability on offense.

Wilcox's defenses just did not appear "fast". SEC defense is quick and hard hitting. His defenses appeared soft (not the players, the style) and gave too much at the line. He is from a conference that just wanted to slow the offense so that his offense could out score you.

He had to play like that.. Teams were getting a ridiculous amount of their points from very long plays.. Remember the crazy stats CDD would bring to light after games? We had a very low ypp outside of the 3 or 4 plays a game that would be 40+. I think that had a lot more to do with lack of speed and recognition in the secondary than coaching or scheme..

This.

Basically a typical offseason VN thread.

If you can't feel the buzz, I can't make you.

Im not saying Sunseri wont do well here, but how does this "buzz" = Wilcox was in over his head? Lets not forget what Wilcox had to work with considering depth, youth, and injuries. The guy did very well with what he had imo.

They sure as heck didn't in their Super Bowl winning season during the playoffs.

It doesn't. At all.

You're right.. You can teach a player whatever technique u want, but if he's not strong/fast enough, this league will eat him up.. Simple as that.. Our db's are still trying to catch Marvin Mitchell... A d coordinator can't make Teague run faster.

I think Herman Lathers is going to spin heads, got good reviews from CSS.
Also like his recruiting pitches he throws out during interviews. He almost looks through that cameras eye, & looks you in the eye, & tells you he is coming. I have to say I am excited as well.

I find it quite funny that I was questioning Wilcox all of last season and I was treated to pitchforks and torches for it. Now he's gone and we have coach Sal, and suddenly all of you are suddenly acting like you knew all along Wilcox was a subpar DC - homerism at its finest....................LOL. Struggle with consistency much, VN??

To be fair, Sal has a lot more pieces to work with than Wilcox had. We had some major talent issues that Wilcox had to work around.
