The more I listen to Coach Sal the more I realize

I find it quite funny that I was questioning Wilcox all of last season and I was treated to pitchforks and torches for it. Now he's gone and we have coach Sal, and suddenly all of you are suddenly acting like you knew all along Wilcox was a subpar DC - homerism at its finest....................LOL. Struggle with consistency much, VN??

Not all my friend, not all. I pegged Wilcox as a lost ball in the tall weeds his first year. Defensive substitution the first year looked like a fire ant hill someone just kicked. Cost us LSU. He got worse last year although that had some to do with lack of depth.

You can blame Chuck Smith for the LSU debacle

lol @ the OP. as ViD just stated, some of you guys are quick to forget what Wilcox stepped into and what he has had to work with. considering Wilcox was fielding a talent and depth depleted team, that could never get a rest because the offense sucked too, i would say he did a good job at UT. i wont even mention the gauntlet of a schedule we had last year, or playing one the most explosive offenses in the country in an OOC game, the year before, in Oregon. unbelievable to say he was in over his head or he is too laid back. sounds like a little too much man crushing over a DC that has yet to coach a game.

You should have been here in October reading the gargage that was thrown at me for questioning Wilcox after USCjr ran for 220 yds + with a freshman backup RB and a backup QB who couldn't throw himself to the ground, much less throw a football.

Dude, he couldn't scheme us a win vs a WR playing QB for a team we hadn't lost to in 26 years.........don't give me that crap about what he had to work with. Our technique was terrible - we bump tackled, our DBs routinely were caught out of position, it goes on and on.

That Justin Wilcox was way in over his head here at Tennessee. This is the first time in a long time that I've been this excited about a coach. Sal is the real deal, and I CAN'T WAIT to see the product on the field!!

Go Vols!

I agree...and some posters on here were worried because he hasn't been a DC in the SEC before! Good grief! The guy has been coaching for a long time. I think UT is in good hands. I would be highly shocked if you don't see a better tackling team as well.

I know very little about this topic and don't claim to know much but I have always heard that Justin's defense was a gimmic defense to disquise less talented
defensive players. Boise State

Just curious, what makes you say that Wilcox was in over his head here? Just wondering what Sunseri has done to make you think that. Honest question

I believe that questions were asked and answered in the first serious of quotes....Wilcox was a good coordinator but do not think for one moment he was capable of dealing with the SEC schedule on a weekly schedule....Boise State really only had 2-3 games a year Wilcox had to address with special defenses...At UT it was a weekly challenge....Don't think that Wilcox could address with players and they were confused...

The interesting thing about this is that I thought L. Kiffin was in over his head here also....Again SEC Mentality....they were able to out talent a lot...Monte Kiffin did well but it was too early to tell with only one year...under his belt and gone....so we may never know....

Anyway, we have the right coach with an understanding of what it requires to put a defense on the field call it Spring Optimism or whatever...CSS knows the requirement and will meet the challenge in due time.....

Boss, they would have been slinging garbage at me too. My wife is GoVolGal on here. I just signed her up the other day. She will tell you I jumped up and down and almost cried I was so happy he was gone.

Bold: Can I use that one...that theres funny, I don't care who you are.

IMO, Wilcox was the better of our two main coordinators..........

That's like saying getting hit in the right nad is better than getting hit in both nads. I predict Chaney is gone at the end of the year. I think you will find someone "robs" him from us.

I would just caution you to wait til he has at least coached a game against a quality opponent instead of making this assumption that he is awesome because he grows loudly and says all the right things. I hope he does well

we gave up 10 points .. that low of a total stands up and has us win every game against UK back to 1983 (which would have been a tie, since we won that game 10-0) .. Just dont think you can peg that game on the D

That makes no sense. What does listening to coach Sal have to do with Wilcox? Fact is Wilcox is considered a rising star in coaching unfortunately he had very little talent and absolutely no depth to work with here. I hope Sal is great and it's pointless to try and compare but to say Wilcox was over his head is ridiculous. Wilcox was a home run hire by Dooley and had he stayed long enough for the talent to catch up he would have done great things here.
