According to the Atlas of World Population, the lowest percentage of the total population that the Asian continent has accounted for - going back all the way to 400 BC - is 58%, and that came in the 1950s.

Even if the margin of error is huge in those early estimates, the numbers are so staggering it doesn't make much of a difference.
