The MTSU Postgame Report

Well said on the post game report...even though that left a sour taste in my mouth, I'm still very proud of this team...they exceeded expectations, and gave us exciting basketball in March...thanks to the seniors for their time on rocky top, and I think we have a lot to look forward to next season!

Yeah, yeah we lost to a "good" MTSU team, but they were still a 4 seed in the NIT. That's the bottom line.

I wouldn't read too much into seeding in the NIT. It's based on who can sell the most tickets. It sucks to lose, especially to an in state team but this certainly wasn't Austin Peay we were playing. Good season, better than anyone thought an excited for the future. Go Vols!

I said it before the game. MTSU does not put a player on the floor that shoots under 45%.
Most of our guys shoot in the 30s.
We need to recruit some shooters.

1. UT lost to a good team today. I was impressed with MTSU. They won 25 games and their conference regular season title for a reason.

2. I was very disappointed in our help defense tonight. Stokes and Maymon were both lazy tonight rotating.

3. Trae Golden should be embarrassed for his defense on Massey. Just flat out embarrassed.

4. It was the same song tonight. The team didn't hit from outside, and they couldn't do anything offensively.

5. I did not like the decision by Cuonzo to go to McBee for a 3 when it was 67-64. I thought that was a bad decision. You have to go to the basket there.

6. Another solid performance from Yemi tonight. One of the very positives from tonight's game. This should help towards next year.

7. This team needs another point guard, and if Kenny Hall is done, another capable big, preferably a shot blocker. There are a couple holes that will prevent this team from being top 25 potentially next year.

8. Despite the sucky ending, this was a good season. They improved immensely, and the team had a very good conference record, and even made a run for an NCAAT bid this year, which was impossible three months ago. I think everyone should be proud of the team, and the progress they made.

Till next year :hi:

Agreed on all points. We need at least one more PG and some wings that can shoot. McBee was 0-7 and McRae was 1-6. If Golden is struggling to guard someone, we have no one else that can help out because we have no other ball handlers that Martin can trust in the critical point in a game.

I thought a key moment in the game was when McRae decided to jack up 2 quick shots when we had the 8 point lead. He killed our momentum and that let MTSU back in the game. Martin gave Golden a rest and I thought he would be ready to go down the stretch, but Massey just drove by him every time.

I didn't feel good at the half when we were down by 2 and three of their starters sat a lot of the half. Missed FT's killed us. We could've had a 12-14 point lead in the 2nd half and the collapse may not have ever happened, but we'll never know. MTSU just wanted it more down the stretch and it appeared that our guys were just gassed. That didn't happen much under Martin, but the last 3 games of the season were not our best efforts which I find hard to understand.

We were on such a hot streak with the Vandy win. Odd to see the momentum disappear.

Thanks again for the wrap-up. As usual, spot on. Love what the team did this year. Think CM can take us far. Just think the team shut down when mt started to hammer them at the end of the game. While I completely support CM, I just don't get the McBee shot near the end of the game. We didn't even need 3 at that point. But, I'm just the casual fan.

Analysis: Our guys did not want this game. This was the State tournament for MTSU, maybe their biggest game of the year.

Vols played uninspired NIT type basketball, with the exception of a couple of short bursts.

Too bad the season ended this way but it was remarkably better than most of us expected. Considering everything this team went through ending up in the NIT is nothing short of amazing. Too bad they went flat when the NCAA option went away, this unfortunately is not uncommon for many teams, that is what I do not like about the NIT.

Great things are ahead for a Cuonzo Martin coached Tennessee team, the future is exciting.

I'll sum it up since no one else wants to get blitzed on this board. These are Pearl's players. They are not made to play this pick and roll and flex motion offenses where you get one guy open outside or look for high lows. Martin gets guys open and these jokers couldn't hit a shot if they were shooting the ball into the Pacific Ocean. Martin wants to penetrate and kick, and he wants to screen for his big men. Here's the thing, it's not rocket science on what to do on defense when a team every time down the court gives the ball inside. Without shooters Martin's system will fail. Pearl's motion offenses were made to waste time and were designed to get players to cut to basket for easy lay ups. Martin likes the one on one match ups on offense. He's a player coach. The TRUE problem is we don't have a guard that could take a middle school kid to the bucket, nor shot his way out of paper bag. These guards are a joke. EVERY team we play consistently kills our guards. MTSU, Oakland, Ole Miss, FL, KY, Miss St. etc all have better guards then us. You think MTSU has four star guards on their team? Well, we started 3 4star athletes, and I'd trade all of them, other then maybe Golden, for any of MTSU's guards. I'll give Golden the benefit of the doubt since he pretty much has to play 40 mins a night; however, he got abused all night on defense. He just has a real consistency problem.

Got abused on the boards tonight 46-30. That's all about hustle and that is what disappoints me the most. Martin preaches hustling and defense and we got abused on both tonight.

For the idiots that think the MTSU loss is embarrassing just shows how ignorant they are to college basketball. Losing to Austin Peay was embarrassing. MTSU is a solid team and should've been in the NCAA's. If we bring it tonight, I think we win. Not one of our best efforts. However, MTSU will be back to their mediocre selves in due order unless Davis can continue to take in anybody that can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Let's look at it this way: in two days, will anyone other than MT fans care? It's the freakin' NIT. Time to focus on next season and get excited for the future.

Help defense sums it up. It completely cost us the game down the stretch.

Hopefully we work on a zone defense to be able to switch into when the opposition repeatedly goes left and takes it to the basket, same thing ole miss did to us.
( minus the push offs )

They'll probably make a DVD out of it.

Is it any coincidence that MTSU has only beaten UT twice in their entire history and both times it was in the NIT?

Previous post about our guard play was spot on. Our guards proved they are not even SUnbelt conference worthy. GOlden is ok, but McRae, Tatum, McBee, Richardson basically contribute nothing to this team other than a few good games a season. You can win in the regular season with decent guards, but once tournament time gets here, you MUST have good guard play. MTSU's guard took GOlden to school and even had 10 rebounds. Unless CCM can get some good guards, we will continue to lose come tourney time (SEC, NCAA or NIT)

Solid write up. I'll add that,

9. The handful of players we have at the 2 and 3 positions are a lost cause. McBee, McRae, and Tatum were again, awful in the loss.

10. We should be embarrassed to lose on our home court to a team that we had on the ropes down by 8 points, only to give up the last 15 points of the game and not score ourselves in the last 7+ minutes.

11. The officials made this game nearly unbearable to watch. The calls were inconsistent, anticipated at times, and phantom at others. Whistle-happy officials looking to make their mark.

12. We missed enough layups and FTs to lose five games.

A successful season all things considered, but this game will, as it should, leave a sour taste in the mouths of players, coaches, and fans alike. We need some serious upgrades at the SG and SF positions and we need another PG. When Golden is out, the whole team goes to hell quickly.

I don't think losing to MSTU itself was embarrassing but the last 7:00 of the same certainly was.

It was obvious that we just ran out of gas. We were either cold as ice (Tatum/McBee/McRae), injured (Maymon/ Golden) or just tired.

Another reason I don't care for the NIT... You get the "leftover" officiating crews. THe 2 NIT games were hard to watch because the officiating was horrendous. THey weren't basketball games, they were FT shooting contests with no flow to the games. ANd we lost the one tonight by missing so many FT's

Uh dude, we finished 2nd in the sec and lose to mtsu? This should never happen. Especially at home. I sware, being a UT alum is becoming embarrasing. I'm in Washington getting laughed at by fukn Gonzaga fans. Geez.
there is a difference between finishing second and being the second best team. You say getting laughed at by Gonzaga fans like they are scrubs or something... they have a better NCAA resume than any SEC team outside of UK and MTSU keep a decent squad.

Basketball is not football. If we lost to MTSU in football thats one thing but in basketball they are not that far off from us.
