12. This team look sluggish. It was like they had played a full game before this one. No energy. MTSU is a good team. agreed.
13. Hard to believe that they lose to Austin Peay and MTSU on their home court in the same season.
14. Brought back Flashbacks of the Kentucky Football game as far as effort.

PLEASE DONT TELL ME THIS MEANS WE'RE ONLY THE 5TH BEST TEAM IN THE STATE OF TN....

I barely post any comments regarding my alma mater here. But congrats to Middle. What I don't understand is why some fans are so quick to blame the Vols for losing to a 'terrible' Middle team. Middle is good this year and had plenty of more motivation to win this game. Although without Dendy next year they will be a middle of the pack Sun Belt team.

I think it's also fair to say that this can be a good learning lesson for a UT team down the road. After all (other than Middle fans), who is going to remember this loss in the NIT next year? Not many. It's the NIT. It's a time for players and coaches to grow and learn.

It is hard to believe but Belmont is another team to consider on that list.

I don't think we are, the team on the court was bad tonight. They looked tired and worn out. They were not up for it. It is the NIT and look like that is what the team felt.

It is not losing to a good MTSU team that bothers me. It was the effort or lack there of that does.

Nothing will erase their achievements of the past season. 2nd in the SEC. They earned it.

Guys, again...it's the NIT. If the fans don't care enough to show up (as shown by the 7K and 12K attendances for the games), how does that motivate the players?

That's something the coaching staff can point to and force those guys to do during off season drills, etc. Very few teams get motivated for postseason tournaments (outside the NCAA). For Middle, it was a chance to prove they belong. For UT, they already did that. It was just 'another game.' CM is still new. He's a great motivator and coach, he'll change that attitude very soon.

Got abused on the boards tonight 46-30. That's all about hustle and that is what disappoints me the most. Martin preaches hustling and defense and we got abused on both tonight.

For the idiots that think the MTSU loss is embarrassing just shows how ignorant they are to college basketball. Losing to Austin Peay was embarrassing. MTSU is a solid team and should've been in the NCAA's. If we bring it tonight, I think we win. Not one of our best efforts. However, MTSU will be back to their mediocre selves in due order unless Davis can continue to take in anybody that can walk and chew gum at the same time.

MTSU should have been a tournament team? They had a conference sos of 299 and didn't beat a top 50 team. What did they do to deserve a tournament bid? College basketball powerhouse Denver Pioneers beat MTSU by 15 a few weeks ago.

I agree and I happy with CCM all the points made by the OP and others are valid.

The team gave get effort this year and it will be something to build on for next year. We are in year 0 for CCM and he has exceeded expectations. Get out recruit some more and mesh this team. Will be good to watch and I like the hard nosed approach to basketball.

The teams advancing in the NCAA are the ones that focus on Defense and the early outs are the ones that did not.

Also, Clay Travis hasn't tweeted about this supposedly "embarrassing" loss, so it must not be that bad.

I'm okay with losing, but losing to a team that is nowhere near as good as you and because our guys played like they didn't want to be there...as a fan it's just hard to watch. as a player, i don't understand why you would work so hard all year and not give it your all on the floor in the post season. Ole Miss and MTSU beat us the exact same way, which was Trae getting beat off the dribble and Stokes or Yemi not sliding over for the help. It was pathetic to watch an amateur team like MTSU have their way with us. I hope they figure it our in the off season cause I don't ever want to watch another game like that.

The biggest thing I have seen over the years of watching college basketball closely is that you can all the talent in the world, but if the other team has more determination, desire and grit...they can win.

RPI, Pomeroy, ESPN BPI and most other rating systems would disagree with you about the caliber of the MTSU team.
I agree with the rest.

They had a RPI of 56. Their conference SOS isn't going to be good because they play in the SunBelt. I guarantee you that if they don't get beat early in their conference tourney that they would've been on the bubble and had a chance to get in even if they didn't win their conference tourney.

They didn't beat a good UCLA team but they crushed them by 20 at their place. They also beat Ole Miss by 8 on a neutral floor. They held their own against Vandy until Vandy pulled away late at Vandy. They were 3-2 against RPI teams 51-100. That's pretty decent for a Sun Belt team.

If you didn't watch them outside of tonight then you don't know what kind of team they had. I think we still should've won and would've if we had played like we gave a damn, but MTSU isn't a bad team and would've given most teams in the NCAA tourney a run for their money and a number of talking heads said the same thing.

I watched the Vandy game. Think they lost by 6 or 7.
They play you 40 minutes.
Our 6 minute lapse in the first and 7 minute in the second killed us.
We still have those every game.

Thanks for the write-ups zjc. I'm relieved the season is over and I look forward to some of our guys getting better in the offseason and making a run into the tourney next season. Go Vols.

I never once said MTSU was a "bad" team. I said they didn't do anything to deserve a tournament bid like the previous poster claimed. If you like the bogus RPI ratings you have to accept that MTSU's big win agaist UCLA wasn't all that impressive since UCLA's rpi was around 130 or so. Tonight they were more focused, better coached and wanted it more then we did. Kermit is the Kevin Stallings of the Sunbelt but he outcoached CCM tonight.

Well you and I will agree to disagree because if they win one game in the Sun Belt tourney then they would've been solidly on the bubble.

Yes, we have to cut down on the 6-7 minute spans of full-on retarded decision-making. These happen almost nightly and have directly contributed to many of our losses, including tonight.

I don't think we played lazy or uninspired. The defense was tenacious at times, but we did give up some easy baskets due to a lack of help and poor rebounding. The biggest factor was our inability to put the biscuit in the basket. If we shoot 30% from the money line and make a couple of those point blank layups or putbacks, it's an easy win. I did not like how we seemed to back off on D once we stormed back.

All in all, a disappointing loss, but it was just the NIT. I'm "Stoked" for 2012.

All your points are spot on, but this team definitely started the night playing uninspired. Stokes was lazy defensively in spurts, especially switching back on picks. The overall effort was D- level until about 8-9 minutes into the game. They picked it up from an effort standpoint as the game went on, but as you noted, couldn't fall out of the boat and hit water.
