The NHL thread (Buffalo, well at least you are not Cleveland)

i'm not what i would call a hockey fan, but when you get to the 2nd round of the playoffs, they're pretty special. i thoroughly enjoyed the Pitt/Was and CAR/Bos series.

hockey's biggest problem is that no one knows anything about it. the average sports fan probably doesn't even know what channel VS is on their cable/satellite system, and besides that, you get a game on NBC once in a blue moon and a 5 minute spot on SC. the only people watching this stuff with any regularity is the hockey fans themselves. The NHL is not drawing a new audience right now, and these two 2nd round series in the East would have been stellar for a fringe fan to watch, like myself.

i equate hockey right now to what NASCAR was 20 years ago.

Hurtful loss for my Bruins last night, but they had a great season & a great run. Im just glad we have something to get excited about with the Bruins now. Cant wait for next season to start.

Boston losing just cleared the path for another Detroit run to the Cup. Thank you Carolina.

it's not going to be easy, but at this point, i'm going to be pretty upset if Lidstrom isn't accepting the Cup for a second straight year. Johan Franzen is my early odds on favorite for the Conn Smythe.

chicago has been hot lately, and i don't know why, but i think if it's pit/det, it won't be like last year.

Anaheim was arguably the hottest team rolling into the second round. in fact, they were probably better than Vancouver and Chicago. the reason they were seeded so low this year is because they had injuries to key players throughout the year. had they been healthy, they would have been competing for their division and maybe even the conference.

the thing that makes Detroit so strong is their depth. most teams can't get production from their 4th line like Detroit can. they keep rolling lines and keeping fresh legs on the ice. they got 3 goals Thursday night from their 3rd line, in a game 7 no less. no other team can boast that kind of depth.

if you can get Detroit to commit stupid penalties you have a chance to score on their penalty kill unit. it's been at the bottom of the league all year and they've allowed at least one PP in every game so far this playoffs.

my only other concern was Osgood and so far he's met my expectations.

if you go back, you'll see i was pretty skeptical about Detroit's chance to skate with the Cup again this year. however, the playoffs have worked out perfectly for them so far. like i said, nobody is going to be a pushover, but there's no reason why they don't have the depth to wear the other team out.

Doozer, this game looks tight. I dont know if my father is watching, he's not a fan of the NBC announcers. It looks like the Redwings are going to win the first game of this series.

I put 25 on the Pens to win. Points that is. On a message board.

But yea, I'm going to be rooting for the Penguins. Partially because Syd Crosby is my favorite NHL player. Partially because I can.

that's all fine, i don't think i'm qualified to question any of it. all i do know is that Detroit is good. watching the SC final last year against the Pens, even for me, i could tell they were just better than Pittsburgh. everything they did was fluid, and with purpose. the Pens were lucky it got to game 6.

all that said, watching them this year, the Pens look like a different team. if the pens stay healthy, cough, malkin, cough, and continue to play like the have the last 3-4 games....i think a DET/PIT series would be awesome.
