I'm not a power engineer, so I really don't know what thickness of steel is used, but most transformers are oil cooled and a shot through the cooling fins would drain the oil and shut them down in pretty short order. A shot into the windings would be catastrophic. Shooting the insulators I would think would be quick, but easily fixed. From the reports I've read, it doesn't sound like it's an easy fix, so I would think they destroyed some transformers. It would most likely take armor piercing type of round to penetrate a station transformer. They are built with pretty heavy gage steel. My guess id they shot the high side bushings off the top of the transformer from a distance They are just porcelain and would easily be destroyed with most any round. They are also a pain to replace. Sounds like they were all source stations because switching and rerouting wasn't a option for Duke. That would require knowledge of the grid to know that or some really lucky guessing.
