The "Occupy" Rallies

You have the right to peaceably assemble, you do not have the right to assemble whereever and whenever you want. If the police instruct you to clear out so they can address an issue of public safety, you should comply.

the exception is if you are poor and pissed off about it

At what point do the police have the right to use force, though?

As in the case of Sgt. Anthony Bologna in NYC when he pepper sprayed 2 peaceful women on two separate occasions and walked away... he was just transferred to a different department and docked 10 vacation days.

They pretty much have legal authority to do it whenever they want.

The have a right to do it only to prevent harm to someone else, prevent destruction of property or prevent theft of property.

That does not mean that they have the legal authority to use force whenever they want.

If they act under the color of authority and are allowed to behave in such a manner with no legal consequences, then in practical effect, they have the legal authority to act that way.

If A breaks a rule and no one is around to witness or catch A breaking said rule that does not mean that A was authorized to break said rule.

The failure of the justice system does not mean that police have the legal authority to use force at their pleasure.

"A rash of reports, nearly a half-dozen..."

Sensationalized much?

"Nearly a half-dozen" would logically mean five or less. Conservatively, lets estimate that the low-end aggregate number of "occupiers" is 35,000. 5 out of 35,000 is a pretty low number.

I am not a fan of the Occupy Movement; however, this report by Fox is ridiculous.

If you wear the fact that you never sought a permit as a badge of honor, and you proudly consider your community outside the confines of the law, and you break into violence against businesses you consider opposed to your cause, you need to accept that the law, and those that enforce it, will not treat you with kid gloves.

SoCal Street Cart Vendors Hurting After ‘Occupy’ Group Splatters Blood, Urine CBS Los Angeles

and the payoff

Coffee cart owner Linda Jenson and hot dog cart operators Letty and Pete Soto said they initially provided free food and drink to demonstrators, but when they stopped, the protesters became violent.

and the understatement of the year award goes to:

The damages will likely require at least a complete cleaning if not a replacement of the cart covers, DeMaio said.

this is why people should need to be capable of rational thought before they can protest. Vancouver riot was caused by the same people who are camping out in OWS.

So they wipe blood and piss all over the livelihood of someone who had given them free food, and we should feel bad if they catch a rubber bullet? Sorry, my sympathy is dried up on that one.

What? Police brutality is ok because someone pissed on a hot dog cart?

Unrestrained lawlessness has consquences. The police could be more gentle, sure, but if you don't join a large, lawless group you don't run the risk of getting whipped by the cops.

this. police could be more restrained...but I'm all for beating some sense into those with no respect for anyone else.
