Obviously hope Barnes can coach for a while, but would hope we find an AD who will be successful long term here and ultimately be responsible for hiring his replacement. I know football is #1, but I’m keeping an eye on what track record the candidates have w basketball hires. Mark Ingram is being mentioned, and his first hire at UAB was a dud. I think Andy Kennedy could be good there but time will tell. He clearly wasn’t a hot commodity.

If it’s Gilbert, gotta love our shot at getting a quality hire post-Barnes. That could cement our turn to hoops school.

He and Rick just seem very close and Rick gave him lots of credit for helping turn around the hoops program during his time at UT. I know people always talk nice about their former colleagues in the same situation, but Rick gave quite a ringing endorsement. Gotta think coach Barnes has his ear in a big way if he comes back to UT.

He was the lead the coaching search that ultimately resulted in hiring Donnie T

Random thought.... Top 4 programs to not have a final 4 appearance in the last 25 years:
Purdue, Xavier, Florida St, Tennessee

Were obviously the best candidate this year to break that streak.

Xavier and Florida state have had solid teams but none elite. We’ve had a few final 4 caliber teams that have fallen short.

Maybe both TN and Bama reach their first Final Fours this year.

Because they’re from the Football Forum and that’s how it’s done over there. Every window licker thinks their thoughts are so awesome and original that they deserve their own thread.

I think overall it’s a fantastic hire. And moreso the sum of the parts. He’s had to make several hires and none of them so far have been bad. His basketball hires are intriguing to me. His dad is/was the Duke AD. I’m sure that had an influence on him hiring Bobby Hurley. I think he is and was overrated but did good at Buffalo. Oats was on staff and got promoted from within. I think how White went about that was impressive; doing his due diligence w the existing team and people who were familiar w him in his high school days. Then Johnny Dawkins, again a Duke guy. UCF was a garbage basketball program, and now they’re not garbage. I think it was a safe and solid hire. So overall it’s a pretty good track record. Fortunately I think Barnes will leave this program in a state which will make it easy for a good AD like White to replace him with a quality coach that will continue what he’s been able to accomplish

And it’s possible the HC is already on the staff.
