I continue to be one of those that has been beating this drum for the last two years that we should just play walk-ons and Boswell for the dang thing. If the committee is gonna make it a joke then let’s provide the punchline. The last several years, there is strong evidence that Saturday and Sunday conference tournament games don’t affect seeding.
Edit: which reminds me. I think this is a problem that needs solved. The committee refuses to acknowledge it they do this. They even send out Lunardi to carry water for them and publicly defend some pretty absurd decisions and positions.
It just makes conference tournaments nearly useless for good teams.
I don't understand why we aren't having Mashack cut around the basket more like we did there in the 1H - he has more than shown he can finish around the rim. Also, I would like to see us work him from corner to corner along the baseline continuously, one, because he has shown he is much more comfortable shooting the 3 from there and, two, it would create opportunities for him to pop into the lane from under the basket or slash to the paint from the corner when his defender falls asleep.
BumpChaz has played well and exceeded realistic expectations for this season after a huge step-up in competition...and, he has done that while playing in arguably the most competitive conference in NCAA history and while being the #1 guy every team schemes to shut down. Without him, there is no way we have only 5 losses and are a solid 2 seed this late in the season.
Based on this, one could argue the real issue is that other players haven't stepped up consistently enough to make other teams pay for their focus on Chaz. Most of our losses are due to games where everyone struggles to score. ZZ and Igor have really struggled this year from 3-pt range vs. their prior seasons although Igor has heated up in recent games - let's hope that trend continues. Gainey has struggled as well in SEC games having only scored 10 or more in 5 of 11 games all while shooting above 33% from 3 only 3 times.
I had hoped Chaz would utilize a good shot fake to get into a 1 or 2 dribble pull-up more often to this point given the tendency for the defenders to jump out of their shoes knowing he has such a quick release (esp since he clearly struggles to finish at the rim and rarely ever draws a foul)...to often he instead tries to dribble his way to his spot but he lacks the handles and speed required to get a clean look so he shoots way too many that are contested imo.
Hopefully we continue to evolve as a team and peak at the right time. GBO!
BVS is strong here and I don’t mock you for it as our “luck” factor never seems that strong.I’m not going to lie, I’m starting to get concerned that 2-seed in the East Tennessee is going to be matched with 10-seed back-to-back defending National Champions UCONN in our bracket. What a nightmare matchup that would be. Lots of underachieving talent on that team. An elite coach.
Feels like last year when a lot of people wanted to be in Purdue’s bracket instead of the 1 in the West because “fans could travel easier” and then no Tennessee fans showed up in Detroit. Really hope we can finish strong and get that 1-seed.
They got so lucky against AZ State. That would’ve been far worse than us losing to Vandy. Good teams find a way to win when they shouldn’t though, like we did at Illinois. Houston has some tough games left so surely they’ll drop 1.Purdue losing to Wisconsin should make sure they don’t pass us. It would be really nice if Houston would drop a game here down the stretch.
From my perspective there’s only a 25% chance they’re in the same region as us then the odds keep falling as they could be on the opposite side of our regional bracket such that we’d both have to reach the elite 8 to match up. Statistically, the odds of us playing any particular team in the tournament are extremely low at this point in the season.I don’t think it’s BVS to think matching up with UCONN that early in the tournament would be a bad draw for Tennessee. And it’s very likely to happen right now with UCONN just losing to 7-18 Seton Hall.
I’ll give him credit for hitting those. I didn’t want him to take those shots as he almost always misses and usually pretty badly. That last one was massive though so kudos to that kid for a great shot that we sorely needed at the time.Mashack hitting two 3s today was huge. We don't need him to score a lot, but we do need him to keep defenses honest by making them pay for leaving him open. If he could average 8 points a game the rest of the way, that's a tremendous boost.
Not to mention, if the committee knows you rolled out the walk ons that would give them a public reason to not use the data.I continue to be one of those that has been beating this drum for the last two years that we should just play walk-ons and Boswell for the dang thing. Maybe you’re onto something. Mashack struggles with the 3 but maybe it’s about his spot.Bump
Mashack showed last year he could hit the corner 3 at a high clip and, the few times he has shot it this season, he has made most of them...I don't understand why our coaching staff hasn't had him run there whenever teams sag off him. Also, I was glad to see Chaz finally utilize an effective shot fake to get some clean pull ups - I've been very frustrated with him (and the coaches) on that for awhile now.
I don’t think he means you saying UConn being an undesirable draw is BVS, I think he’s saying it’s BVS to think that we will draw them.I don’t think it’s BVS to think matching up with UCONN that early in the tournament would be a bad draw for Tennessee. Totally agree that’s not a team I want to see.Well they’re being projected on the 10-seed line right now in many places. So that is at minimum a 25% chance we draw them in their scenario. I know lower seeds aren’t supposed to get geographical preference, but I would be kind of stunned if UCONN isn’t in the East or Midwest.
We all know the corner 3 is statistically easier so it makes sense he would shoot "better" from there and I obviously don't have the data but I'm pretty confident in my recollection from last year about him hitting at a very high rate (+35% clip) precisely because I was so surprised he would hit them "almost every time" (because I would say "noooo....yes!" so often - lol) in comparison to missing "every time" from everywhere else along the arc.Maybe you’re onto something. Mashack struggles with the 3 but maybe it’s about his spot.
Agreed on Chaz. And I absolutely loved the intelligence of Okpara to get that 5th foul on Carey. He knew it was intense and Carey was expecting Okpara to go aggressive to counter Carey’s dunk. Instead he hesitated just enough to throw Carey off. It was beautifully smart basketball!
