Stonewall Jackson in Gods and Generals, and in real life it is reported. On the day he, or his brigade he would say, earned the nickname Stonewall, he had arrived late on the battlefield with his troops to the First Battle of Bull Run. It is nothing short of miraculous they were even there, having marched some 100 miles in 5 days. The Union general in charge patently refused to believe the news Jackson's men had taken the field, knowing good and well where they had been 5 days prior.

Anyway, Jackson formed line of battle and waited for the opportune time to strike as frantic Rebels from the initial engagement of the morning had broken and were unceremoniously racing away from the battle. One passing soldier stopped beneath Jackson's horse and said, "The day is going against us."

Jackson calmly looked at him and uttered the rebuke, "If you think so, sir, you'd best say nothing of it!"

Not long thereafter, South Carolinian Gen Barnard Bee, quite possibly the commanding officer of the aforementioned retreating soldier, rallied his men by exclaiming, "Look men, there is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer. Rally to the Virginians!"

Not long hence, Gen Bee would give more than a nickname that day. He gave his life fighting for his homeland and his men.
