The Official #1 Tennessee vs Florida SEC Tourney Championship Game Thread (Sunday May 29 3PM EST ESPN2)

I knew it was going to be a great day. My brother unexpectedly found a Gator in his pool (lives outside of Jax, FL) so he called the Wildlife fishery dept.
The pics begin w the intro of the players, national anthem, pics of son and I and then our Vols getting the Dub before the Rocky Top celebration.

Jared Dickey's mom sat behind us at Hoover on Sunday. Nice lady! I congratulated her on her son's recovery & base hit in his first return to duty. Once when Evan Russell got dinged behind the plate, I asked her if Jared had ever been a catcher..."YES, & he's hoping to be the Vols' catcher next season". News to me.
Well I wish I had known that. We were together. We shared an AirBNB with Dickeys and were sitting together.
I was going to say the other day when y’all were talking about catching that Jared actually came to be a catcher. I think him and Chuck will share time unless there is someone new coming. I won’t be surprised if they pick one out of the transfer portal

I’ve enjoyed reading/lurking so here are my impressions of Hoover and the tournament.
* GREAT EXPERIENCE. And I wasn’t there for final/watched on TV. LATE nights gutted this old dude. Seeing Vandyboys almost run ruled, LSU fans quieted and Kentucky spanked was awesome.
* My first time to Hoover. They do it right. Bad that Birmingham is in belly of beast but prob the best centrally located place to have it. Write this one down/when Whorns join SEC they will be pu$hing hard for venue to “rotate” ie, be in Austin every other year.
* $7 for a hot dog a bit much but kudos to SEC/Hoover for free parking. They could have made a boatload of $$ at $10/car.
* Ate at Walk-Ons just off the Hoover exit. Really good sports bar set up. Duck/anduille sausage and poboy very good. Didn’t realize we had one in Knoxville.
* Met a couple of players families at hotel. Great folks!
* Everybody has pretty much summed up the team and what it has done for University and fans. They are fun to watch! They are so good but have lots of pressure on them to go to Omaha and win. It’s baseball/anything can happen but hard to imagine another future TENN team like this that is stacked with pitching, solid hitting 1-9 and plays good D. I want it all but regardless of what happens we as fans need to FULLY appreciate what this team is/has done.
* Maybe it’s because I played CF back in the days of the wooden bat and being taught to catch with two hands—Drew Gilbert is my man. Leader, clutch hitter, intense and PATROLS the outfield like a Marine on a mission!
* Didn’t have one negative experience with opposing team fans. Had great chats with A&M, LSU, Bama, and Ole Miss fan(s). Though you could tell the LSU folks were a bit resentful that we have our hands around their necks!
* Ok that’s my diatribe/back in the weeds.

I had a busy day yesterday but I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for raising a young man who is such a pivotal part of this team and community. Congrats to your son and the BaseVols on a great accomplishment. Even though it was a busy day, I was still watching from my phone. SEC regular and Tournament Champs has a nice ring to it. Go Vols

I love watching OF catch with both hands. That’s how I was taught, how I played, and how I’m teaching my son.
My wife “trimmed” our TV options for the summer, as we have had some unexpected expenses and she’s saving up for a trip in the fall, so I didn’t get to watch any of the games on TV. I could have gone somewhere and watched, but there is something about just sitting in my rocker on the porch or sitting on the couch, ear buds in, listening to the games on the Vol Network. All of them. And following the thread on VN when I was unable to listen due to being otherwise pre-disposed. I could see the games in my head- all the players and coaches, hearing the crowd, wishing I was there. Because I’m in SC, I got an extra charge out of Kirby and his pitching. I have made it a point to discuss with all the Clemson and SC fans about his story with the Vols and how awesome it is that he’s doing well. The relief pitcher from Greenville (his name escapes me atm) will be another point of discussion moving forward.
I’ve said it since I was a child watching the Vols on network television and finally getting to see Knoxville in 1982, and I will say it til my dying day- there is NOTHING like the Tennessee Volunteers, Vol Nation, being on Rocky Top, and hearing “Go Vols” shouted my way in various places and decibel levels wherever I go. I am always representing the Big Orange.
I am so thankful to God for His blessings.
I look forward to the next few weeks and beyond.

He was #3 this year behind Chuck Taylor He caught a few innings before the injury.

Proud of our team for winning the SEC Conference Tournament title yesterday. It was a heck of a run through the tournament under less than ideal conditions with the rain outs and late night games. It was wonderful seeing our guys celebrate afterwards and just be in the moment with each other. I got emotional watching Coach V get emotional in his postgame interview with Kris Budden. Proud of Vol Nation for making the Hoover Met LNS 2.0!

Onwards to our Regional this weekend!

The Better Late Than Never Post Game Report:

We’re SEC Champs, The Overall #1 seed. You all know that already. Ya’ll also know we brought it back to Knoxville and if yer like me, maybe a tense inning here or there but our Vols never seemed in danger of losing.

When I got home last night I fully planned to do this write up but a strange thing happened after I opened my beer. I drank about half of one, next thing I know it’s 5:30 AM. I’m still a noob. Before I drifted off I read a bunch of game thread posts and tried to catch up.

Seems to me all the baseball stuff has been discussed y’all don’t need me to regurgitate it. All I’ll add is Luc, at least in person, was a catalyst. I’m not saying Drew didn’t deserve MVP in that one but, over the course of the week Luc came up big at opportunistic times. So, tip of the Cap Luc.

There’s also no need for me to talk about the event staff or fans of other schools. Excellence!

One thing. I’ll probably get it for this one, but here goes.

I was happy to see so much Orange at the Championship Game. I fully appreciate people coming down, up or over to see the fellas bring it home.

But…while we had the strongest showing, that day of any Fan Base during the tournament, because of proximity…I expected a throw down. I expected we would be yelling our heads off, expected we’d clap, stand, etc…

I know this is gonna irk some but, given our numbers yesterday, I was not impressed, in fact it was depressing. Compared to the way the UT/LSU game, or even UK games went, it seemed subdued. It reminded me of big basketball games, where the fans don’t do their part until the players deserve it. Maybe it had something to do with UF not having many fans. VU didn’t have many either but UT fans had a plan for the Whistler!

This has nothing to do with the team or the outcome, they play with so much fire and calm determination, maybe it doesn’t matter.

Maybe it’s just pickin a nit and the Regionals will be a different story. It was the least fun game I attended all week. Maybe it was just the section I was in, but other than the dugout section, I didn’t hear much enthusiasm unless the team did something to warrant it. Just my two cents.

GBO!!!
