The Official #12 Tennessee @ Auburn Game Thread, 2:00 PM ET, ESPN

We are ok. I didn’t really expect to win this game today. All year really good teams lost to good teams on the road. We played pretty well up until crunch time. It hurt us having Mashack and JJJ in foul trouble, and Mashack’s aggressive play on offense wasn’t there this game. Kentucky took care of business for us so it’s looking like a 5 seed. Barring a HUGE upset with Ole Miss beating Mizzou. It’s possible with them only down 5 at halftime, but we will see. It’s one more game we will have to play in the SEC tournament, but often times the team with a double bye has a hard time getting going. If we get the 5 seed and we get some positive momentum with a win on Thursday it may just propel us to win the quarterfinal on Friday. If we make the semifinal I’m honestly happy with that, but if we get the double bye I’d really like to get to the final. We will see what happens. Fingers crossed that Ole Miss pulls the upset

This is what a team limping to the finish line looks like. Also what a team looks like that’s going to get beat by a double digit seed in first round

What is so ironic is Auburn might lose in the first round to a Arky or Mississippi State. They would probably beat Florida

This is such a weird season. Lot of average to good teams, but not really any great teams which is why I’m still not conceding this season. Even without ZZ, I think we can beat just about anybody on a neutral floor. Comes down to if we can string wins together.

exactly. Our best NCAA tournament teams still haven't made it past the elite 8, while some of our least talented walked into a sweet 16 with Cuonzo. Let's see where the chips fall on a neutral floor.

Good for you, so do I. I just try not to let my emotions of the moment cloud my view of the entire season. I think we can at least agree that our bigs need to show more consistency, and practice shooting free throws.
As for JJJ, I actually don’t disagree that sometimes you don’t notice when he’s in the game. However, I certainly do notice when he’s not in the game. His impact is one that is less seen, but not insignificant.

Even if we won this game I wouldn't think we get past round 2 of the NCAA. I watch our bigs during the game simply because I think they can't really play. One is unstable on his feet and need to get in the weight room. He'd rather run to the 3 point line on offense than bang because he doesn't have a strong core. The other one has a nice touch from 5 feet in but has a bunch of holes in his game that keeps him on the bench a lot more.

Tough loss. Hopefully they can win a couple in SEC tourney but I don’t mind if they win 1 and lose 1. Then they could rest up….
Side note Bert & Bob go out of their WAY to not give player of the game to Santiago! He has been the obvious choice a handful of games and they never give it to him. Anyone know why?

No I'm not. They are adequate but the bigs don't give us much when we lose. When was the last time we lost, but said boy that Tennessee big went for 20 and 10 though.

I think we are on the saying the same thing. Barnes’ system requires the guards to play inside out. I’ve been screaming for more dribble - drive penetration from JJJ and Phillips all yr. Someone commented that maybe JJJ’s body prevents him from driving inside. Idk if that is the case but we won’t go far relying on threes.

I don’t understand why our bigs play so poorly on offense ir can’t shoot foul shots. I used to watch Dante Jones (Ms State) and Vince Yarbrough coach their bigs in AAU ball. They ran drills and post play was all about repetition.

ZZ was need this game more than any tho. Green is the same build as ZZ and we didn’t really have the guards to stay in front. Edwards wouldn’t helped. Mashack would have been the one, but foul trouble (trash officiating impacting the game again) made it hard.
I'm still trying to figure Edwards out. He's not a PG according to some. I'm not seeing him as an elite shooter unless I'm missing something. He's not up to speed on defense even after a full season. Got zero minutes today I think. So where does he fit long term here? Yes, players do improve and get better, but isn't it more likely that he's recruited over? Maybe with the ZZ situation and our need for immediate help next season, he's encouraged to move on? Just curious to see how he fits on this roster going forward.

Who got it? Awaka?

Strengths and weaknesses has something to do with it in each example you cited.

You don’t throw a true freshman into that spot. Setup to fail about every time. I look to see Edward to get minutes on a neutral court. He is pg and he is a bigger one. We saw Mashack development this season and I expect Edward be the same next year with a better offensive game.

We just need to find the right guys. ZZ was a little known 3 star but he is a solid PG. Just need to find more with the skill set like him but preferably taller.

I was listening. They gave it Santi and said we wouldn't even be in the game without him. Not sure what you heard.

When I said roasted, I was referring to “officiating” causing TN to lose the game.

I know what you were referring to,and I agree with what you said. This wasn't a loss that can chalked up to poor officiating. Just a poorly executed game, especially in the second half, by Tennessee. They got beat in every part of the game in the second half. Auburn also played with desperation coming off the Alabama loss. They wanted it more .

It’s not just our bigs…this is pretty much the state of modern basketball at every level including this one and the NBA.

There is such an emphasis on the 3-point shot anymore. There are a few talented big men, but they are few and far between. And the really talented ones score from beyond the arc almost as much as they score inside. And post-up play is virtually extinct.

We’re not going to win many ballgames with a combined 14 points from our 4 post players. Other than Awaka’s rebounding, those guys collectively played very poorly today. Might be the worst I’ve seen from the giraffe.

On to the tourneys - hopefully our bigs can get their Adoodoo together going forward!

I watched from the tip off to the final second. I'm Officially certain (official because I say so lol) that certain games are set up for a particular team to win. The fouls and non fouls today were ridiculous. I'm a fair man, call it as it is but geeezzz! Vescovi tries to draw fouls constantly but if he tripped once he tripped 62 times today from being Plastered by the defense

So with two buzzer beater losses we beat Alabama and then smoked Arkansas after losing at A&M... You're wrong.
You pointed at two games where TN won and neither team had anything to lose in losing those games. My point is when the other team has a strong motivation this team doesn't rise to it. And going forward where it's win or go home every team will be that motivated.
