The Official #12 Tennessee @ Auburn Game Thread, 2:00 PM ET, ESPN

Not too bad for the first full game without Zeigler and @ Auburn at that. Turnovers, foul trouble, and missed free throws killed us in the end. The conference should be sending Tennessee a check for helping so many teams out in the bid department.

Work on lineups and rest up next week in the worthless SEC tournament and let's roll the dice in the dance.

Really hope Awaka & JP can become consistent interior scorers. If both can become 12+ ppg players with good rebounding we could see some seriously good success in the next few years with how we’re recruiting.

too positive.

I’ll get roasted but so be it. The refs didn’t cause us to lose this game. We lost this game b/c Auburn had way too many open looks and easy layups. We lack speed which hurt us today, along with missed foul shots (less than 50%), stupid fouls and turnovers.

While we shot well, we don’t have a “go to” guy which has been our issue all yr. Our bigs play small, so we can’t count on them consistently when we need a basket. Santi, Phillips, and JJJ try but lose control of the ball, or travel, inside the the paint.

We were up three late in the game and then went scoreless in last four minutes.

I have hope as that is what the dance brings us, but I doubt we will get beyond the first weekend as every team plays their best game against us while we find a way to make mistakes at inopportune times.

Plus, we we just don’t have the guards to go beyond the Sweet 16 and panic in the last four min of a close game.

I love Awaka’s hustle and how he can develop offensively. Mashack has the heart but needs to work on his shot and finishing. Phillips needs to return but his heart is with the NBA so time will tell. Aidoo is hit or miss.

Time is running out for Uros, Santi, JJJ and ON as all four need to move on after the yr.

Very well said! I don't think there's any reason you'd be roasted. Outside of the great wins against Kansas ,Texas and Alabama, they've had so many let down games. The injuries haven't helped, but that's not the only thing holding them this year. Just very inconsistent in regards to the way they play from one game to the next. Not sure about the NCAA tournament, but at least they'll make it. Maybe they'll surprise some people this year.

Both actually. I said it yesterday or the day before. Pearl was legitimately upset, but he was also laying the ground work to influence the refs in this game. It's like setting up moves in chess several plays in advance. Pearl knew exactly what he was doing with his behavior.
yep, he's a master at that. Manipulation is his thing.

You don't have to qualify your post.

You mentioned our guards as being the problem. Our guards score most of our points. I know the thought is guards that take over games can lead you deep in the tournament but the problem is bigs you have to get in the perfect spot just to make a single play. Awaka and ON are the only athletic bigs, and Awaka is the only one who rebounds outside his zone.

So are you saying our guards are good enough to go beyond the first weekend?
Awaka is a beast on the boards so hopefully he can improve his post moves and midrange jumper. I personally think ON has been a disappointment this yr.

Yeah that's it. I'm definitely not the biggest Regular season Rick fan that's for sure. He's even slipping there at this point. No way this team should be 11-7 in this mediocre conference.
Everybody knows how I feel about Rick. But you cant blame this finish on him. Too many injuries.

Lol…we moved ahead of Bama on KenPom and now #3.

The revolving door of top 15 teams losing every week is why our metrics haven't moved. Everyone is losing so the metrics have stayed relatively stable. The only thing that can really hurt us right now is losing that 13/14 matchup to start the SECT, otherwise we're locked into that 3 seed. Only TN and Baylor have 3 wins over top 10 teams.

When I said roasted, I was referring to “officiating” causing TN to lose the game.

ZZ was need this game more than any tho. Green is the same build as ZZ and we didn’t really have the guards to stay in front. Edwards wouldn’t helped. Mashack would have been the one, but foul trouble (trash officiating impacting the game again) made it hard.

Lol ok...I watch the game.
Good for you, so do I. I just try not to let my emotions of the moment cloud my view of the entire season. I think we can at least agree that our bigs need to show more consistency, and practice shooting free throws.
As for JJJ, I actually don’t disagree that sometimes you don’t notice when he’s in the game. However, I certainly do notice when he’s not in the game. His impact is one that is less seen, but not insignificant.

technically yes, but that double bye was really lost in the last minute at Vandy and last minute at home at MO. It is what it is at this point.
Not trying to be a defeatist, but the best chance this team has for any success in the NCAAT is defense. One and done in the SECT is fine with me. Limit the minutes and take the L. We'll be a 5 seed regardless IMO so just give this team a break and see what we can do in the NCAAT.

You need/expect your seniors to step up down the stretch in close games. Ours just have not the past month or so.

Some of them have stepped up. Santi is finding his shot again. JJJ has been productive since his return. I'm excited to see what they do in the ncaas

No I'm not. They are adequate but the bigs don't give us much when we lose. When was the last time we lost, but said boy that Tennessee big went for 20 and 10 though.

I don't think it's defeatist to say our best success is defense. That's who we are. We should be in EVERY game we play because of the defense. We are going to need some offense and a little bit of magic to make a memorable run. Anything can happen come March.

You don't want to be the 5. You just don't if you're this team.

If he doesn’t learn to shoot foul shots he should be backup his entire career. Missing free throws just kills you.

This is such a weird season. Lot of average to good teams, but not really any great teams which is why I’m still not conceding this season. Even without ZZ, I think we can beat just about anybody on a neutral floor. Comes down to if we can string wins together.
