The Official #12 Tennessee vs. Colorado Game Thread, 6:00 PM ET, SEC Network+

Ernie was a bruiser, bull in a China shop guy that could also knock down outside shots with defenders in his face. King was lightning quick and could also hit from 15-17 feet if defenders backed off. Bernard might be the quickest at attacking the hoop that I’ve ever seen at any level. And he was a ferocious competitor, defender, and rebounder. They both had great vision.

Best looking Vols bball team I've ever seen. Tons of mistakes and early season issues tonight. But, talent, depth, skill, experience, athleticism, and intensity is going to make this an exciting season if we can keep the tyrants hands off it.

I'm surprised that so many are so impressed with this win. I feel like we could have played so much better.
I think you sort of asked and answered. We clearly didn't play to our potential but still built a solid team comfortably in our first game and with a lot of missed practice

First game of season, minimum practices due to COVID and many individual players limit more due to contact tracing. Lots of new faces that had not played together before. The team we played already had a couple of games under their belt and is a power 5 team. I’m not crowning us national champ but see a lot of potential.

No. It was a bad offensive performance. Your two senior stars were AWOL.
I agree, Pons was lucky his shots even hit the floor.

What is everyone's opinion on James, was he more aggressive on offense than he was last season? I'd have to say a minor uptick

Not from what I saw. 2-6. I didn’t see him push things and they certainly needed someone to step up.

I thought James looked a little more aggressive. Probably just due to him being healthy. I don't think he will ever have the mentality to take over games but he will be very reliable with a good stat line. When he is hitting 3's he can be a mid teens scorer.

I thought James looked more deliberate in everything he did. He stuffed the stat sheet with no turnovers. Based off the very little information we have about the team and just one game under our belt, James's role may not be one as a scorer. If we didn't have a team full of capable scorers, I would be more concerned.

At this point, I definitely disagree with anyone stating he's underperformed in any way. As the season goes on, I suspect we all may be surprised by several roles that several players are delegated/relegated to fill.

He should JP Prince junior/senior year. That what I think will be his best role. Guard really hard and rebound, push the pace some, hit open 3’s (unlike JP) and keep the ball moving.

Funny you should post that because I think JJJ’s game and how he handles the ball reminds me of Tashaun Prince. Their games were similar and first cousins iirc.

I can agree with that. I honestly don't remember JP's defensive prowess. JJJ looks good to me in that regard. Was JP considered below, at, or above average defensively?

he was good. it's hard to judge Pearl's players defense against Barnes's players defense because Pearl didn't emphasize it much.. and Barnes over-emphasizes it.

Prince was a solid defender. Evan Turner at Ohio State remembers.

I think James is a nice player but the obsession that several on here have with protecting him from any criticism is a little weird.

I don’t think it’s obsessively protecting him. I think that it’s pointing out the flaws of his critics that consider making baskets far and away the only way to judge players. He’s one of the best at the other things like passing, rebounding, versatility, not making stupid decisions, not being a liability defensively or at the free throw line, unselfish play. If he gets his shot technique perfected he can be the MVP of this team while some posters want to bench him and limit his minutes. There’s only one basketball to share and he is an outstanding player to keep on the court that will make those around him better.
