You guys seem to be in tune w soccer, how would you like his rule change.
Put in something similar to the blue line in hockey, say about 25 yards out. And no offsides once the ball passes said line. Would increase scoring as well. Ive thought about an end line behind the net akin to hockey but dont think it would work w corners and such.
Would love to see the MLS give it a shot
Would make the MLS even more different from the rest of the world's professional leagues. They need to build that up with talent, not rule-changes that will never go into effect on a big stage.
Also, I think that would slow the game down, not speed it up. Changing off-sides like that would change strategy so that a striker would just hang by that line to cherry-pick opportunities and a sweeper would always remain back there for support. The line you describe is basically what midfield serves as right now. That allows defenders to push up to help their team's attack. If another guy has to remain back to keep an eye on the cherry-picking striker, that changes things and slows the game down.
Off-sides may be difficult to explain to your father-in-law who only likes football and golf, but it's there to keep the pace of the game moving.
Good points all around. One rule change I want to see is extra time being more accurate. I know FIFA is trying but they are way off. Its a jokeAgreed. Would make the game much worse and provide little space to pass into attacking zone. Right now, soccer has a blue line and its called the defender sitting deepest. This proposed change would make dribbling more of a priority instead of passing.
