Some observations:
England is a funny team. They usually come into these WCs highly overrated (mostly by their own fans) but this year they seem to be somewhat under the radar despite having a better squad than they had in the past couple WCs.
Unpopular time to make this statement given they just beat the tourney favorite, but Mexico seems to me like a really overrated team historically. 123m people, a nation that is crazy about soccer, but the furthest they have been in a WC is the QF and both of those times they were the hosts. Sometimes (not this year, obviously) they aren't even the best team in CONCACAF. It seems like they should be a historical, national power team like a Germany, Italy, or France (bigger populations than all those counties with the same passion about the sport) but they are not. What gives? Maybe this is the year they go deeper than they ever have been. Doesn't it just seem like Mexico is a team that should have won a WC at some point, or at least made a semifinal/final? They also never seem to have any true superstars.
Belgium is damn good, by any measure, and they are really damn good when you consider they are a country of 11.3m people. However, despite their small population size it seems like they underachieve in WCs too. Their best finish is 4th, and they didn't even qualify as recently as 2006 and 2010. At every position group (in goal, defense, midfield, forwards) they ooze talent and experience.
It's strange watching this tournament with Italy and the Netherlands not in it. The US, honestly, not so much.
