The Official 2022 FIFA World Cup Thread

Seems that having a soft spot for the Dutch is a common theme on here. I latched onto them during their semi-final run at the 1998 WC simply because I liked the orange kits.

They’re usually an enjoyable watch, although this year’s version of the squad is pretty lacking going forward compared with those teams that had Van Nistelrooy, Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder and Kuyt.

If things can fall out so that Argentina doesn’t win their group this afternoon, the US couldn’t have stumbled into a more favorable quadrant of the draw for a shot at a semi-final run. Would avoid Brazil, France, Spain, Argentina and Germany.

Damn...that list of guys you spelled out right there were so damn good.

Such a shame for them that their Golden Generation (aside from Van Nistelrooy who was a bit older) all pretty much peaked right in the exact same four year window that Spain produced one of the greatest collections of talent any one country has ever assembled.

Couldn't remember who all was that Spanish squad and looked it up, good lord.

Their BENCH for the 2010 Final included Cesc Fabregas, Fernando Torres, David Silva, Jesus Navas, Javi Martinez and Juan Mata. Like you said, good lord.

They were so frustrating because of the way they dominated possession. They could just go forever passing it around between the two 18-yard boxes.

Those Barca teams that were around at the same time (and had a bunch of players on it from the Spanish national team) did the same thing. Some of the best club teams of all time probably.

People always raved about it, but I never found it enjoyable to watch. I just think 200 five yard passes that result in a tap-in at the back post is especially entertaining. Respect it? Of course. Enjoy it? Not so much.

Yeah, the matches where they played aggressive were awesome to watch, and the games where they sandbagged, it wasn't very fun at all.

I can't say I watched a ton of Barca in those days (I've always been more of a casual soccer fan), but the fact that they only played 4 of 5 games all year (and maybe 2 La Liga games all year) where they had a realistic chance of not winning made it less entertaining/impressive than it probably was. Most of their games looked like a grown adult man wrestling a toddler.

I’d rather see Mexico go through over Poland or Saudi Arabia any day.
