The Official 2022 FIFA World Cup Thread

Probably, but Mbappe has been the best player and I'm rooting for the Netherlands (loved Sneijder and Robbin, back in the day). Was it Van Persie or another Van that was on that runner-up team? Might have been the Euros, damn short-term memory loss
Mbappe has been great. I said at the start of the tournament that with Frances injuries they would be crashing out somewhere around the quarterfinals. They very well could against England, I’ll honestly be pulling for England, but the way Mbappe has been playing I could easily see a France win as well. Giroud has been playing really well too. Big Giroud fan, happy to see it.

Reactions: The Dog

On one hand they are correct, and on the other I think they are kind of unreasonable and too hard on them.

Of course Fox is going to present the sport in a way so that it connects with an American audience. Given that soccer is not super popular here, they are also going to do it in a way that probably seems hokey or contrived to a European. I would not expect a Brit to be enthralled with how an American TV channel covers the tournament, just like I wouldn't expect an American NFL fan to be impressed with how the BBC covers the Super Bowl.

As for the critique of everything in the broadcast having a sponsor, I find that a little rich given that soccer for years has used the player's jerseys as billboards, well before any American sports did and to a much greater extent. The BBC is also funded with the TV licensing fee that all TV owners in the UK have to pay. I imagine they don't run ads in the same way because they don't have to, and it allows them to act all holier-than-thou, as though they aren't commercially minded as well.

He's right about Donovan though. He has the charisma of a damp rag.

NBC has really nailed the model for how to cater a soccer broadcast to an American audience in a way that is both accessible for new/casual fans, but is also not insulting or too watered-down for more sophisticated viewers. So…it can be done, so long as Alexi Lalas isn’t anywhere near the set. My favorite line from the article…
Asked to offer a prediction before the US match against England, Lalas thundered, “I don’t know how they say it in the King’s English but dose a seero my friends to the USA,” helpfully demonstrating that he doesn’t know how to say “dos a cero” in the King’s Spanish either.

I bet the England/France game is gigantic in Europe. The Battle of the English Channel and even more more witty headlines. I bet it's crazy like Super Bowl week. Wouldn't that be fun and it's in the round of 8

There was a point after Neymar scored, Brazil was moving forward on attack and instead of passing, Neymar turned to waste time, the ball went out and Croatia was awarded the ball. At that point it seemed like way too much time, they should have kept pushing for another goal.

It's like they thought the game was over just because of the Neymar goal. Hats off to Croatia, never gave up.
