The Official 2025 March Madness Discussion Thread

1 seeds = all 4 in Sweet Sixteen
2 seeds = 3 of the 4 in Sweet Sixteen
3 seeds = 2 of the 4 in Sweet Sixteen
4 seeds = 3 of the 4 in Sweet Sixteen

1 10 seed is in
1 5 seed is in
2 6 seeds are in

Just goes to show being a top 4 seed really helps.

"perfect bracket"

We beat Kentucky, then get to beat Purdue for our first Final Four trip....not sure who is the best matchup for us from the East BYU is the lowest seed...but they'd have to beat Bama and likely Duke...don't see it happening.

Yeah, I gathered that. I was just wondering why he posted that to my comment when I clearly said "New Mexico" in the commenthe originally replied to, and haven't mentioned anything about that travel call in the Maryland game.

He must’ve been sitting on defending that horrible no call and jumped on yours without thinking about it.

Still a big believer that the play in games should be the last 8 at large teams.....
100% agree. I heard ESPN radio debating this a couple weeks ago and it was hilarious. One of the people debating just couldn’t wrap his head around the concept. He kept saying it’s not fair to make the overall 1 seed play an 11 seed in the first round. The other guy, after several minutes, finally got him to understand that the seeds don’t change, just where the play in game sits does. Instead of 2 16s it’s all 4 11 seeds up for grabs, for example.

For the Field of 64, here is what Im a fan of

All 31 AQs make it. The next 25 highest rated at-larges make it. Finally you have 16 at-large teams fight for last 8 spots. This increases number of teams to 72. The games for these will be held at first and second round location, not Dayton...

I'm just saying that I will take the knowledge and words of a 2 time National Championship Head Coach and a Tennessee Legend over a bunch of anonymous individuals posting comments on a message board. I believe they know more about the game and the rules than most armchair fans.

Both individuals stated the non call on the play was the correct because by the rules it wasn't a walk if you disagree E-Mail Candace Parker and Jay Wright.

I won’t contact anyone only trust what my eyes see. There’s bad calls in sports and always will be. There’s also people in positions that don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground.

So Candace Parker and Jay Wright don't know their @$$ from a hole in the ground. 🤦

What does the rule say?

It's not a travel in the NBA or FIBA. It's not even close, actually. It's a gather + 2 steps.

Is it a travel in the NCAA by rule? Probably. As the NCAA has not officially adopted the gather step phrasing.

But I think this type of travel is really hard to catch or see in a bang-bang play. It's hard and a little subjective to determine even in slow motion IMO.

And I know some disagree and think it was blatant or obvious etc.. and whatever. That's fine. You are entitled to that opinion.

Also, this type of psudeo travel happens on lots of fast break dunks and layups in the NCAA. Never gets called there.

I love to rip on officials, but this is the type of play where I don't envy their jobs. Because if you call a travel there, and you were wrong, you can't take it back. You just ended somebody's season. And few people's basketball careers.

"CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander said he spoke to a “veteran official” who confirmed that Queen “absolutely traveled on this shot.”

The narrative around the clear travel today is now that you don't call it in that situation because it ruins the drama. One person even said he couldn't imagine taking that moment away from Maryland. That, in a nutshell, is horsepuckey. The game was stolen from the underdog. You can watch older NBA players etc talking about how strictly traveling rules used to be enforced vs now. They added the gather step in the NBA and it's turned into 4 or 5 steps being allowed. If you don't call the clear travel there, remove it from the rulebook entirely.

And if you miss the call what happens? It’s a tough job but there’s no excuse for being consistently awful at it. It’s tough watching basketball at any level nowadays because officiating is horrible.

You call a travel and Maryland losses. You don't call a travel and the outcome gets determined on the court still.

And you may not like that answer. And IDK if I like that answer either.

But in end of game situations, the whistle largely gets swallowed unless the call is super clear and egregious. It's just kind of always been that way. Right or wrong.

He traveled and it ended the career of a bunch of young men. The argument goes both ways and they got it wrong.

But this isn’t the NBA or FIBA is it? And by not calling it, they ended Colorado State’s season. So that works both ways.

If they aren’t going to enforce taking 3 steps, just get rid of the rule and let them run around without dribbling at all. They could do it like Australian Football rules.

I don’t see Purdue beating Houston. In fact, I don’t think it will be a close game. Cougars by at least 15.

I guess I must not have clearly explained my position because it sounds like we are having different conversations.

If the point that you are trying to make is that officials should blow the whistle more often and be correct more often. Great. Everybody agrees with that.
