The Official 2025 March Madness Discussion Thread

Yeah, but it’s a little embarrassing they push folks like Salatore to defile themselves in order to defend it. Upon replay he clearly took 3 steps but in real time and at the very end of a game the ref is probably swallowing their whistle. Like you said - right or wrong.

I fully agree with that. This seems true in all major sports with the retired ref correspondents. They will bend themselves into pretzels to protect the officials.

The NCAA has looked the other way for years when it comes to inconsistent officiating.

Nothing will be done about it but it’s slowly ruining the game imo.

But this isn’t the NBA or FIBA is it? And by not calling it, they ended Colorado State’s season. So that works both ways.

If they aren’t going to enforce taking 3 steps, just get rid of the rule and let them run around without dribbling at all. They could do it like Australian Football rules.
He clearly took 3 steps. Yet why someone like Gene Salatore is required to degrade himself by making excuses for it is bizarre. His explanation would basically allow for a player to take a ball all the way down the court without dribbling if he just bats it around in his hands like a hot potato. Just say he took 3 steps and it’s a hard call to make at the end of the game in real time. Both can be true

I guess I must not have clearly explained my position because it sounds like we are having different conversations.

If the point that you are trying to make is that officials should blow the whistle more often and be correct more often. Great. Everybody agrees with that.
Not sure if you were addressing me or the other guy. Wouldn’t know what he said since he’s on the Ignore list. You had said if they call it and it’s wrong, they ended somebody’s season. I simply pointed out that if they don’t blow the whistle and it wrong, they also ended somebody’s season. In this case, Colorado State’s. It works both ways.

Absolutely agree. I don’t care if he was “gathering the ball” or not. He took 3 steps after he picked up his dribble and that is a violation under the current NCAA rules. Obviously not in the NBA or WNBA although the college game is approaching it in every other facet so they might as well allow that too.

Watching Illinois versus Kentucky, first thought Illinois plays terrible defense, 2nd thought, Vols are in trouble if Kentucky wins and plays like this
They had their chances and had success when they drove to the basketball. A lot of the times when Kentucky missed a 3 they would come down and jack a 3. We did the same against KY.
Especially in the first game.

You absolutely can not settle against KY.
They shoot the 3 well, and when they do take 2's their percentages are good.
You must drive the ball/go inside on KY. Get physical on offense with them as well as defense.
The teams that have had their way with them have all done this.

They may give us some open 3's and even long 2's, but we have to resist the urge to jack them up (Chaz Lanier being the only exception).
Taking the ball inside is the way to beat KY.
Especially early, if nothing else it gets their bigs in foul trouble.
This should be the rule. If we do shoot the 3 it should be to extend a lead or because the shot clock is about to expire. Other than that, take it to the hole!

For the Field of 64, here is what Im a fan of

All 31 AQs make it. The next 25 highest rated at-larges make it. Finally you have 16 at-large teams fight for last 8 spots. This increases number of teams to 72. The games for these will be held at first and second round location, not Dayton...
Works for me.

Well. I think Maryland is a tougher game for Florida, so I’m happy about that

Rumor mill has Maryland’s coach leaving for Villanova following the tournament.

Their fans are upset over reports he skipped the team dinner last night. Text messages from players made public on it, not the best look given the stakes tonight.

So typically...I'd pull for no SEC teams but Vols to win next.

But..Ole Miss upsetting Michigan State would be fun. Arkansas upsetting Texas Tech would be grand as well.

So 3 SEC teams in Elite Eight

Vols, Ole Miss, Arkansas

You think Bama and Auburn both get bounced?

I'm so confused how me saying what I would LIKE to see happen is being taken as what I THINK will happen.

I would be shocked if both Auburn and Bama get bounced with the matchups they have. I also don't think Florida is likely to lose.

Want = all the SEC high seeds beaten but Vols
Think = all the SEC high seeds advance

You said "3 SEC teams in the Elite Eight: Vols, Ole Miss, Arkansas." That sounded like a prediction to me - you didn't specify in the original post. If it was or if it wasn't, no biggie. That's just how it reads.

I won't be shocked if Auburn gets bounced by Michigan St.
