The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Budget tends to be the biggest obstacle. At those ranges, a good Red Dot would be fine. But if you want magnification at a good price with good quality and without the crazy fish eye:

Primary Arms SLx 1-6x24mm FFP Rifle Scope - Illuminated ACSS-RAPTOR-5.56/.308

Primary Arms SLx 1-8x24FFP Rifle Scope - Illuminated ACSS-RAPTOR-5.56/5.45/.308

I've got one of their older 1-6 on my AR-10 carbine. It works well for what I use it for.

Otherwise, price isn't a consideration, I'd suggest Aimpoint, Trijicon and EOTech depending on your preferences. I'm partial to EOTech, but that's just me.

EOTech EXPS2-0 Holographic Weapon Sight

Trijicon MRO2 MOA Red Dot - No Mount

Aimpoint Micro T-2 Red Dot Sight with Standard Mount - 2 MOA

Within a 100 yards, you really don't "need" magnification. However, outside of that, it's nice to have.
Any 3 of these red dots work fine w co-witness?

Just got a shipment of 1000 rounds of 5.56 ammo I ordered from RKguns in. Felt like a kid in a candy store.

Yes, either for absolute or lower 1/3 depending on the mount you choose. Shooters choice on that. Absolute works very well with flip ups (no FSB) and leads to a more "natural" shooting position.

I'm assuming you have the M-LOK fore end system on your rifle as advertised by FN. Are you getting a BUIS set? It's not "need to have" but when you need it... reasonably priced set would be the Magpul MBUS polymer series. Works well for the "oh ****" situations.

As for lights and lasers. Are you talking visible lasers? If so, save your money for something else... like a sling and mags. Lasers are a neat doodad, little more. If we're talking for an NVG setup, that's a different story.

Sling, sling, sling. Padded works well. Larue does an exceptional sling, but it's on backorder at the moment. And you'll need an M-LOK capable QD mount for that for the fore end. I'd suggest Impact Weapons Components or Midwest Industries. Check the Midwest Industries website, Brownells, Primary Arms or Palmetto State Armory.

Mags, mags, mags. I tend to stick to what I know and have used. I stick to Magpul M2 or M3, Lancer L5AWM opaque, E-Lander (gotten quite expensive these days, but they are bulletproof) or standard aluminum mags of the D&H, Brownells or Okay/NHMTG variety. Ten to start.

We can talk triggers, charging handles and muzzle devices if you want in another post. Oh, and drop an H2 buffer and Springco Blue in that thing. You'll thank me later.

As for lights, the best money can get is (IMO) the Surefire Scout Pro. 1,000 lumens in a compact package. Check around for the best deal.

Avoid the following dealers:

Thanks I just picked up some extra mags, now the trouble of filling them. Was looking at recommended bullet weights for barrel twist and for my 1:7 it says a 62+ grain bullet. If shooting targets not at long distance how much does that matter? Would seem like 55 grain would be fine at short to mid range?

A 1/7 twist will be good for anything from 52-77 grains. There really isn't a "recommended" ammo weight so to speak, though I'd shy away from the lightweight stuff under 50 grains. (the bullet can explode from the twist rate) The Barnes 50 grain TSX should run okay since it's a solid, but I have no experience with that. 1/7 is kind of the "universal" twist rate and most commonly used these days.

Depending on your application, there are several brands I'd recommend for "defensive" ammo:

Federal XM556FBIT3 62 grain, Winchester RA556B 62 grain, Hornady TAP T2 75 grain, Black Hills 62 grain TSX or Barnes 70 grain VOR-TX

You have a 5.56 chambered rifle (or will soon) so anything will feed in it from .223 to 5.56. As stated, trying to feed it is a trick right now as all ammo manufacturers are working overtime trying to fill orders. But for backyard plinking, whatever you can find will run. If just shooting up soda cans, Russian animal brands and Tula works fine. If you find .mil surplus or M193/M855, go for it. Runs fine though the 855 tends to be a bit less accurate.

I’m 45 going on 65. My sight has went to hell and now my hearing sucks. My favorite things to say now are what and pardon. Although it can be worked to your advantage. Slice has us by a few years. He can sympathize.

I tend to use the quote from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

"It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage."

I think the only reason 1/7 is popular is because of the military aspect.

IMO, the 1/8 is better, and is as common as 1/7 nowadays.

Having trouble finding defensive rounds. But I picked up a bunch of .223 Wolf gold to break the gun in with at the range 🤨

When I purchased, they were able to sell me 40 rds of PMC 5.56 LAP

A lot of precision barrels are 1/8 or 1/7.7. To my knowledge, only one major manufacturer makes a "standard" carbine with a 1/8 barrel. But it's not necessarily "better" in the great scheme of things. A 1/7 will do perfectly fine for most applications.

It all depends on the manufacturer of said barrel.

Check Midway every morning for ammo.
They have been getting a steady flow but it sells out quickly.

Most people are very happy with the Wolf Gold. I take it you found it on SGAmmo? It's marked .223, but supposedly it's loaded a bit hotter almost to the 5.56 level.

The PMC LAP is basically M855 spec. Don't expect a lot of accuracy out of it.

My go to for ammo (in normal times):

SGAmmo
Ammo 2 Go
Widners
AIM Surplus
J&G Sales
Ammoman
Palmetto State Armory (expect looooooooooooong shipping times)
Midway
Sportsmans Guide
The-Armory.com
US Armorment (yes, they misspelled Armament... anyway, they tend to stick to mil-spec rounds, but sometimes a good source though pricey)

Generally, if I can't find it on one of those websites, it can't be found.
