The Official #4 Tennessee vs #15 Kentucky Game Thread, Saturday 4:00 PM EST/CBS

I appreciate the explanation.
There’s no perfect answer. If he hits the three, we all love the choice. He was shooting 40% from three before that shot. You hope for JJJ in his last game that the ball goes in. Sadly it didn’t. We lost the game several times tonight before that shot. I also think Kentucky was the better team tonight.

No doubt. Effort is never an issue. Maybe unfocused and timid at times but never a lack of effort
i know. With these guys if they come out fast and hit shots early they seem to play well the whole game. But if they come out a little timid and miss their first couple of shots then they seem to struggle, except maybe Dalton.

Losing to Kentucky is not expected. wtf are you talking about. And still have a better resume than Arizona for the 1 by a mile. Don’t really care if we get it or not tbh
There were some...
We've had a heckuva run, but UK is catching us at a really good time. Know we're at home, but they're still smarting from the beating we gave them earlier. With the regular season title in the books, it's only natural to lose a bit of our edge and that's not a good thing against a team with the talent UK possesses. Plus, for some reason, these "senior days" or days we recognize greats seems to bring out less than stellar performances from us. When that team gets rolling, they can be a real problem. I think we see UK stealing this one from us on Saturday. Felt 3-1 was about the best we could hope for in this 4 game stretch anyway.

Not to burst your fantasy, but DK made two threes in the last seventeen minutes because they were doubling him outside. But I’m sure those last ten seconds would’ve been different.
doubling DK would result in somebody else being open, instead of having JJJ shoot a contested 3 with 10+ seconds left.

They were daring her to shoot it. She had never made a 3 before. Of the 5 players on the floor, you want her to shoot. That's why the backed off. Would you want to guard her and her pass it to a real shooter? No, you let her take it. It was a lucky bank 3. The 2 missed free throws cost us the game.
One made foul shot wins the game but it was poor defense.

You might note that Reed and Sheppard shot defended looks all night, and hit them consistently. They shot over Mashack and Josiah. Credit where credit is due here. They shot lights out. If you can score over Mashack and Josiah, you can score over anyone.
Late closeouts would be a better way to put it. I will give you that. UK is one of those up in the face of the shooters teams. They shoot a high percentage from three all season, especially there big three. This is not a one off like the Texas A&M game. You can't let them have those looks

Like I said in another thread. It’s the right choice if it goes in and the wrong one if it doesn’t. He was shooting 40% from three. In fact, he was only hitting from three. They had all of there defenders out on our guards because a two wouldn’t hurt them. I’ve drawn up a lot of last plays on a board, but on the court they work or they don’t. On that play, DK is supposed to fake the back door and run baseline out for the three. Kentucky bit on it. Unfortunately Dalton slipped before he could cut and peel out.

Maybe a silver lining to this loss…ZZ only played 29 minutes. I know we all would have taken 38 minutes and the win, but maybe not playing so many minutes tonight will serve as a bit of a respite for a guy who is asked to play a ton of minutes on most nights.

Kentucky made the 3s when they needed them and then we had to keep clawing back. I am sorry but I just don't understand what is going on with Vescovi. He has got to start scoring with some consistency.
Him not giving us some points really hurts...Got to be in the head.

Agree. Sometimes you just get beat and Ky deserved to win the game. We had our chances but KY answered every run and made their foul shots. They also played better defense.

I haven’t seen the brackets but we may see them next Saturday if they are the #3 seed.

They’ll be on the opposite side of the bracket. If we get past Auburn, we’ll see FL, Bama or UK.

My gosh. I just saw the highlight of the Lady Vols game. How in the he$$ was she that open? That’s ridiculous. There wasn’t a player near her.

I just caught the replay, as I was at the men’s game, and that has to be to the absent minded, nonsensical, idiotic coaching job I’ve ever seen.

So many ways to approach that last possession, and they chose the brain dead option.

Words just completely fail. The LV program would be better served to just cut Harper loose and get the right hire, because next year is looking to be a disaster in the making.

Still trying to figure out my feelings on the men’s game today without being overly emotional about it. There were a lot of positives, but losing to KY stings and makes me irrational.

Edit- just read an article with seeds.

All four below can win the SEC tourney and/or go deep in the dance.

1.TN
2 KY
3. Bama
4.Auburn

It looks like we play the winner of LSU/MS State winner.

Yeah. I hate it for the players, esp the seniors. My son is a jr @ UT and he’s still frustrated with the loss. But he will be fine tomorrow when they head to spring break - 😆.

I just read Barnes’ comments regarding Knecht needing to pass to an open man rather than shooting a three. Plus he seems to be a loss for words regarding Santi lacking confidence.
Hopefully we can rest and then get to the semis next weekend.

We will be a 2 seed, imo, as Arizona, or possibly UNC, could leapfrog us. But we can still win it all and this team believes.

Being down by three on an inbounds play, the opposing team is going to bring the bigs out of the lane to guard the three. Any look at a three in that situation is rare. A single cover from a closing guard is about as good a look as you’ll get. We pulled our bigs out of the offense to rebound. Option one was Knecht. He fell down. Option two was Josiah on the baseline. The bigs stay in to rebound and kick. When Josiah got the ball, ZZ stayed put to get the kick. So did DK. Everything went wrong— missed shot, no guard’s rebounding etc. It’s unfortunate, but unfortunately it was the only look available.

Exactly. Bottom line is they got as open a look from 3 as you could ask for in that situation, JJJ just had to knock it down. The whole defense was focusing on Dalton, almost forcing it somewhere else.

That play didn't lose the game, those Kentucky runs when we went cold were what did it. Can't be down double-digits consistently and expect to have the energy to keep fighting back, and yet we had a shot at it. Team came out flat, almost to be expected on an emotional senior day after the gauntlet these guys had been through the last few weeks. That, and Sheppard and Reeves just never missed.
