The Official #5 Tennessee vs. #6 Alabama Game Thread, 4:00 PM ET, ESPN

Love this photo.

Danny, Danny, Danny. Juuuuuust missed that handshake, my man.

I don't know what game Nate Oats was watching: "Tough call on Grant’s (Nelson) verticality play there at the end, but it’s the game of basketball. A lot of tough calls in the game."

Seriously. And Oats didn't say a single thing to credit Tennessee or even acknowledge them. Just went on about being the better team for 39. and a half minutes. Meanwhile Rick's over there talking about respecting Alabama. Tsk tsk.

What a game. UT had a lot of empty offensive possessions, some really bad turnovers and missed a ton of free throws, but had enough to pull it off in the end.

Love JM. Not the most talented offensive player, fantastic defensive player, and has the heart of a warrior who gives you everything he has every night.

But my goodness. These refs are just horrible. You let bama players just lower their shoulder, repeatedly into the UT defender who jumps straight up and call a foul. Or let Sears or whoever the guy was kick his foot out on a 3 point shot and call a defensive foul. Just ridiculous.

Regardless, I’m lighting up a cigar and having a bourbon now so all is good.

GO VOLS!!

But isn’t it great to be an infuriated winner rather than a sore loser, even with the same fact base.

After watching the replay, the officials were even worse than I thought. Tons of b.s. that went Bama's way for them to even be in it. Chaz was shoved to the floor from behind, right in front of an official, no call, and Bama got a three point play out of it. When Nelson got hurt on the Mashack play, he fouled Mashack who was clearly in front of him on the loose ball. But Mashack gets called and they get two free throws. Huge moving screen on the Sears three that made it 73-70, after Bama stood in the lane 5 seconds holding the ball.

You left out the fly by 3 ball foul and the tripping that even the announcers jumped on.

The NCAA needs to end the practice of refs having dialog with coaches THROUGHOUT the game. One has to wonder if those bitch sessions impact honest reaction.

Major eye rolls when they stand two feet away and look away and speak out of the corner of their mouth. Tricky huh.

Maybe put a required timeout in the BOOK.

The officiating was so bad this was the first game where I was thinking the officials were trying to intentionally fix the outcome of the game. The last 2 plays where Z got tripped and knocked down and the terrible call on Mashack against Nelson were egregious.

I feel obliged to say that I liked this call. I have my issues with Bob calling football but I think he is pretty darn good calling basketball. I was listening to the game while working and this call got me excited. It was clear to me that Bob was excited and Burt yelling 'Money!' in the background really got me going. My personal tastes differ from other posters on this board, it seems. I want the play by play guy to be objective and calm (for the most part) but I like the color guy to be excitable and a complete homer. That is exactly what I get with Bob and Burt.

A lot of that on the Bama message boards also. A few blame Oats for blowing the last minute while others are convinced the officiating was totally biased to Tennessee

I will never complain about the refs. Every fan base in America - all 364 of them - thinks the officials are out to get them, not a single fan can control what happens on the floor, and these things have a way of evening out, so it’s a level playing field. Refs are human beings and until you are in their shoes calling a game, what you perceive as a fan running on emotion is not always reality.

What I noticed about yesterday was that the whistles were very quick for both teams in the first half, and very slow in the second half, for the most part, but the physicality of the game lasted 40 minutes. Just an observation.

They're nearly as delusional as Kentucky fans. They literally tripped ZZ twice with no call in the final minute and got away with a clear moving screen on the 3 that put them up 73-70 late. They got 15 free throws in the first half, and ZZ/Igor in foul trouble, and just couldn't make them. They lost because they couldn't defend Gainey/Chaz/ZZ and Mashack outworked their guys late and chose to shove him when he beat them on the box out.

Makes it even more satisfying win and easier to not like Nate Oates. Not that I needed and new reasons to not like him, but I got one if I need it.

I understand that it’s hard, I just felt like they missed a lot of calls in this particular game. I get that it works out overall generally but I just wish each actual game was fairer because I feel bad when the team wins on a missed call and obviously when the team loses on some
