The Official #9 Tennessee vs #14 LSU Weekend Series Thread (Game 1 Friday @ 6:32PM) (Game 2 Saturday @ 6PM) (Game 3 Sunday @ 1PM)

Second game is 7 innings tomorrow

This really makes no sense to me with a suspended game. A DH I get it but there should be some leeway before the start of game 3 to make the call.
If this one inning takes 15 minutes it’s completely dumb to play a 7. I don’t understand why a travel curfew doesn’t take priority.

with that said a 7inn game helps the Vols. The bullpen has been shaky lately

I don’t know LSU staff but I wonder if they close this game with the game 3 starter.
If they don’t have a reliable closer they might

Losing Leath was devastating for this club. Right now it appears CTV trusts 4 guys in the pen when it matters.
1. Sewell
2. Walsh
3. Connell
4. Hunley

That isn’t enough weapons to get us where we want to go. Going forward, I believe Frank & Tony have to get McLaughlin and Housley in the fire. Both those guys can sling it 92-95 for 1 inning at least. That is all you need from a bullpen arm in games like last night. IMO we have to use our crafty lefties wisely and in certain matchups but ultimately we need what other SEC teams have in their pens which is gas. Then hand it off to Hunley in the 9th.

I would like to see the filling arms in the pen ready to go when called on.
1. Sewell (RHP 88-91)
2. Walsh (LHP 86-89)
3. Connell (LHP 86-89)
4. Hunley (RHP 89-92)
5. Housley (RHP 91-94)
6. McLaughlin (RHP 91-94)
7. Sechrist (LHP 87-90)

I was thinking about this last night and I believe you are correct. We don't have enough arms in the back of the bullpen, yet

Agree with this. I know Heflin has been on a short leash but I’d use him as a lefty specialist. He’s not an SEC weekend starter. McLaughlin may not be either but he’s been good in extended outings this year. I’d start him on Saturdays.

thoughts on this

Hunley moves into a starting role and that allows that slot to go longer than Heflin. Just switch them out

If we had 2 Hunleys I could see doing this but we can’t afford to swap those 2. Hunley is a proven commodity over several years to close out games in tight spots. Heflin is not and his stuff isn’t quite as good. I like Heflin starting between Dallas & Tidwell, just need to have more quality arms and velo available when needed out of the pen (IMO).
