The Official Hire Chris Burke Thread.

I am Zack Godley's mom, just to be clear what parent is chiming in. I don't know Coach Raleigh and I will agree that something is wrong because we do have talent on our team and talking about Coach Raleigh, the pitching coach has done an awesome job. I don't know if any of you know it but Zack did not start pitching until his Junior year in high school so he still has a lot to learn. I will tell you that if Tennessee hires the coach from Coastal Caroline you will be trading the devil for the deep blue sea. When Zack decided to come to UT the coach at Coastal used words that cannot be repeated. He also told him that him that he hoped the next 3 years would be the worst years of his life and he hoped he never threw another strike. If given the chance Zack could help us win some games. Tennessee does not want Coastal Carolina's coach, trust me or ask Zack what was said to him.

best of luck to your son, we are proud to have him. for the record, we don't want their previous or current coach.

Garner, Honeycutt, or Cockrell I could handle. That would actually be awesome. On the other hand, I can't see hiring a guy who has never coached. I say shoot big if it doesn't work come back down to earth and hire Ken Campbell from the JUCO ranks. He's right down the interstate at Walters State in Morristown Tn. Laugh if you want but dude can coach his rear off. He saw success at ETSU and has turned Walters State into a top 5 JUCO program, possibly the best JUCO program nationally. He has 518 wins in 11 yrs at WSCC giving him an .814 win % averaging a 47-10 record per season. He has 4 JUCO College WS appearances and 1 NC. He's had many kids drafted and signed by SEC schools and has FANTASTIC relationships with the top HS coaches in the state. He wouldn't boast an .814 win % in the SEC, but .650 would get us to Hoover and give us a puncher's chance. Hell that's all I'm asking for. Will it happen? No. But I would do that WAY before I would bring in Burke who hasn't coached and doesn't have a solid staff assembled.

I could hear the roar from this thread all the way over in the football forum. My eight ball says the roar will only get louder.

How in the world is Burke even being considered?

He's never been a coach at the D1 level and he just came out of MLB 2 years ago.....what makes him remotely qualified for the job???

Hyams just tweeted that Raleigh will be fired sunday and Burke is the leading candidate, FWI!

Bama....wow if true about Burke.....that'd definitely be a VERY questionable hire after having such a horrendous coach....Burke has NEVER coached at ANY level

500k is the most we should pay realistically.

If Burke is hired, Hamilton should be fired on the spot. That would be the most atrocious hire in any sport in long, long time.

Although he's not my first choice. He'd be infinitely better than the Raleigh hire.

Other than the fact that Chris Burke knows where the library is, how do you know he would be a better hire than Raleigh.

I hate to say this, but no way is hiring a guy with ZERO experience a better hire.

Let's not let our 4-year frustration with Todd Raleigh make us completely illogical. Even though I love Chris Burke; his hire would be the worst head coach hire at ut ever.

The closest UT has ever come to such a mistake was in Tennis.

A few years ago, locals were clamoring to hire Chris Woodruff. That Chris was a few years older than this Chris and had a little more success as a pro and colegian but Mike Hamilton (I can't believe I'm going to say this) made the right call and hire Sam Winterbottom who in turn kept Woodruff as an assistant coach.

That was Mike Hamilton's best hire to date.

I can't believe Hamilton would do the exact opposite in this case.

Like I've said before, Burke would not be my first choice. However, I am 100% certain he would do a better job than Raleigh.

Handing him the reins 20 years ago would be risky and would be a bad hire. But what do you actually have to lose at this point?

With that said, there are a few directions that will pan out that will keep us from knowing how well he would do at this point. That is if Hamilton can prevent screwing the pooch. Which I am highly concerned he will. I've seen him do it.

As I said I'm confused. You either invest, like Vandy with Corbin or you just don't care. Burke may be the guy but there is absolutely no way to know. There are guys(not Serrano,McDonnall etc.) that could turn Tennessee baseball around because they've done it other places.

One of those guys is bringing his own staff and we're paying for them too. Right?

Pearl is the only proven winner Hamilton and Co. has hired in the big three sports. Baseball is such a small amount of money by comparison...seriously this is just getting depressing.

Let me say this. Vandy has a better baseball team, vandy's basketball team is right there with us, and beat us twice last year. As long as we beat them in football, it's equal. Is that it?

This whole post is predicated on the failure of Burke. What happens if he doesn't fail?

But it will take several years for him to succeed as he will have to learn the job first.

why wait?

Hire an experienced guy with a good track record.

Don't hire the nice guy, alumnus with no track record of success or failure.
