The Official Kentucky @ Tennessee Series Thread (Fri. 5/12 6:30PM EST SEC NET+) (Sat. 5/13 Noon EST SEC Network) (Sun. 5/14 1PM EST SEC NET+)

Here’s a stat we all, you all, can be proud of…36 pages of posts. 3 got deleted, and one was a bad joke having to do with John Calapari, a quoted response, and a TWSS.

For a game thread…collectively we, ya’ll, done good!

I love this place!

GBO!!!

I go to one game and the whole place burns down 🤣

Batting .319 with 7 HR and 33 RBI…I sometimes wonder why fans think guys are super human. His average was better at KU but had only 8 HR total last year. Ahuna is a good college baseball player.

I haven't looked at stats, but this seems like a typical week in the life of Maui. Like 2-3 against Austin Peay; 0-6 against Kentucky.

He kills weaker pitching which raises his average. Guess that is why his numbers were good in Kansas.

But, whatever...he is a Vol now, so gooooooooooooo Maui!!!

I would be curious as to how much left-handed pitching he saw at Kansas last year. I know he’s seen an inordinate amount of lefties in Knoxville. Plus, I think injuries and missed time early on factor in more than we realize, in addition to incredibly tough competition.

3/12 against A&M; 3/11 against LSU; 3/11 and 7 RBI against Vandy; 4/13 against MSU; 6/15 against UGA

Maybe a little truth to what you suggested. But not terrible in the big series.

Maybe a dumb question, but why do righties seem to do ok vs right handed pitching, but lefties struggle against left handed pitching?

That‘s not a dumb question at all. I suppose there are just so many variables involved with each individual that it’s just hard to say. I’m right-handed and preferred hitting against righties. Hated hitting against lefties. I just saw the ball better for some reason, or maybe I saw so many more right-handers it was just more comfortable.

I would be curious to hear what others think.

Because, starting at age 7-8, all batters see right handed pitchers 90% of time. So, both sides of plate become accustom to that.

There are not enough years in development to ever overcome that bias.

As a right handed hitter, I liked hitting off southpaws. In low levels, they typical threw slow speeds and were trying to throw junk. It was usually easy pickin's.

Leaping forward, by college, teams gather up 4-6 lefthanders. They typically are throwing stuff with fastball in 86-89 range, and breaking stuff that really moves. It is very difficult for left hand hitters to not bail out, or flinch, on the sharp breaking stuff.

As you move on up into pro ball, you will find lefties throwing as hard as the righties. They are highly sought.

Hey hey...thank you. That makes me feel better.

It bothers me that he missed eight games, yet leads team in strikeouts. He doesn't put the ball in play, and that bothers me for a leadoff batter. I realize that is old school thinking.

The color commentary guy last night may be on the right trail. Maui may be mostly guessing fastball. With his extra long swing, that would explain why he misses so badly on pitches that break 10-12 inches.

Very satisfying win.

Let's do this again tomorrow.
I'm probably alone on this, but I see today's game #2 as the most important of the season. Win it and the pressure goes way down and we can dream of a sweep. Either way, we're set up well for the final series on the road. Lose today and the pressure level sky rockets for game 3. I don't even want to think about losing this last home series and have to get a series win or maybe a sweep at SC. Not sure this team can handle that right now. If we ever needed a return to last season form by Dolander and our pen, today's the day. Gotta have this one.
