More on Volpe -

His defense has not been “bad”. He’s made errors (he plays SS), and he doesn’t have great range, but some of the advanced metrics are promising.

He’s accumulated 1.0 dWAR so far. That’s good. (If he racks up 4 Wins total for the season, that will be a hell of a debut imo)

That 1.0 dWAR puts him near the top of the AL leaderboard too.

Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) also likes him - he’s accumulated +4 so far, which puts him on par with Lindor so far this season.

The advanced defensive metrics are a bit split on how they view Volpe. Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) views him as one of the better shortstops in the game. He’s compiled 4 DRS, which ties him with Francisco Lindor, Jeremy Pena and Zack Neto for fourth among shortstops.

There’s a lot to like about his rookie campaign so far, especially considering he should be in AAA. Jmo.

His defense feels like an upgrade over IKF at SS last year, though I love the 2023 outfielder version of IKF

IKF can plug any hole for Yanks, earning more playing time

Playing a handful of positions hasn’t affected his bat. Since June 1, in fact, Kiner-Falefa is 21-for-68 (.309), prompting manager Aaron Boone to say Tuesday morning that Kiner-Falefa deserves more playing time. On Tuesday afternoon against the Orioles, Kiner-Falefa started at third base over Josh Donaldson and DJ Lemahieu, both of whom have been struggling at the plate of late.

That’s also the year he homered in 8 straight games.

He was arguably the best player in baseball for 4 seasons from ‘84 - ‘87, putting up on average -

210 Hits, 46 2B, 30 HR, 121 RBI, 102 Runs
.337/.381/.560 .941 OPS 155 OPS+

He won 4 Gold Gloves in those 4 years too.

The back injury late in 1987 derailed him. He was headed to the Hall.
Still finished with 2000 hits, 400 2B, 200 HR, and 1000 RBI & Runs.

He was pretty good.

Postseason hero? Better than average but not great statistically. Benefitted from playing on a loaded team. And steroids. He benefitted from those too
Eh, any team that makes multiple postseason runs is probably loaded. He won a lot of postseason games (granted, in an extended postseason environment).

And it was growth hormone, not steroids! C’mon man, words matter. 😁
