On June 8, 1969, the New York Yankees retired Mickey Mantle's number 7 jersey in front of a sold-out crowd of 61,000 fans at Yankee Stadium. The ceremony was held on Mickey Mantle Day, and included a farewell speech from Mantle, who had announced his retirement three months earlier at the age of 37.
