Babe Ruth announces his retirement at the age of 40.
The southpaw slugger’s final season, in 1935, was with the Boston Braves. He had joined the Braves with the hope that he’d become the team’s manager the next season. However, this dream never came to pass for a disappointed Ruth.

Thanks Babe!

Lou Gehrig passed away at his home in the Bronx on June 2, 1941, by coincidence 16 years to the day from when he had replaced Wally Pipp at first base for the Yankees, beginning his streak of consecutive games played.

In honor of Lou Gehrig’s Day, I’ll make my annual plug (ok, it’s more than simply once a year)…

If Gehrig doesn’t get sick - he retires as the greatest player of all-time, and still is to this day.
