The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Give a 1 year ban to all the FF jackasses that kept this/the old CRB thread alive after losses. Permaban the BB forum jackasses that did the same.

I'm not sure it can even be argued with a straight face anymore that Barnes isn't the best coach we've ever had. Multple #1 rankings, being ranked more in the Top 5 than the rest of UT basketball history combined, 2 SEC Championships (1 outright), first SECT win in over 40 years, made it to 4 SECT Championship Games, 7 straight NCAAT and even if you want to be that guy and count that in 2020 we probably don't make the NCAAT that would still be 7 out of 8 seasons, 4 Sweet 16s , 3 straight and now 2 straight EEs. And we're not even done and we are legit NC contenders. Nobody will be shocked if we won it all. Also he's won at Rupp 4 times and been better against UK than any UT coach I've ever seen even given the recent struggles.

You cant correct me? I mean help me learn......give me some knowledge. My premise is Rick Barnes is a hall of fame DEFENSIVE coach and generally all-around great coach. Developing offensive talent is not his forte and there is no evidence its a thing he does. Thats been my premise this whole time. Hell I'll make you cringe more... Proof of what i'm saying Bruce Pearl is a great coach and a terrible developer of talent. He can take talent and win.. but guys don't normally develop under him. I don't know your definition but developing a guy is taking a raw talent and making it something it was not before you had it. MJ putting on muscle, developing a fade away and later a 3 point shot is development. WIth the exception of KD and DK kinda funny how that works out.. All the players Barnes has sent to the NBA were there for their defense. Those guys are who they are and didn't need anyone to teach them to score.

Goodness, where do we start? If you don’t think that players like Bone, Schofield, GWill, Knecht, Gainey, Lanier and others have improved offensively during their times at UT, you are crazy. Even ZZ has improved dramatically on that side of the ball from his freshman season.

Take Bone, for example. PPG went from 7 for his first year to 13 for his last. ZZ’s points and assists went up every year. Same for GWill.

Just because you can conjure up some wacko narrative in your own mind does not make it so. The stats don’t lie.

There is no question it’s CRB, and it ain’t close. Two EE’s in a row cemented it. Only the second and third in our history.

Plus, he’s made Kentucky our equal in basketball.

All the support is there, just need the right coach. After today it is abundantly clear Barnes, who is a great coach, isnt that guy.
Totally disagree. We have the right coach, give credit to Houston for an outstanding defensive game Plan. They cut off the head of the snake (ZZ) and he had no impact on the game offensively. He couldn’t get into the paint and do any damage. Sure one can argue we wasn’t ready, and that falls on our coaches but I think most of vol nation over valued our win over Kentucky and under valued how good Houston is. They are not flashy they just grind offensively, hit timely 3s, and tap out offensive rebounds to get more chances to score. Defensively, they make you execute and we had no low post presence to score to release the defensive pressure to score on our guards. So, I say it again, Rick Barnes is the right coach, you are just frustrated like we all are about our performance today.

Disagree. Got us 30 wins and an elite 8 appearance with a depleted roster. Barnes gets more with less. Look at how he developed ZZ. We can play coulda woulda shoulda but had Estrella stayed healthy and Carr not transferred out today may have been different. We had no one who could get inside the paint today. Estrella is 6’11 250 lbs. if he can get a mean streak he could be the guy.

@BernardKingGOAT

You gotta stop insulting hurt fans on here man who remotely question your god. UT choked today. In fact, we are now in the record books today with the lowest points EVER for a 1 or 2 seed. Barnes owns that record now and will never lose it. He has done a lot of really good things here but his reputation of not being able to win the big one is a reputation he earned himself. It’s not the fans fault for being able to see it. Had a great year. We maxed out our teams potential. Go Vols!

We have made the elite eight 3 times. All three have come within the last 15 years. Two have come within the last 13 months.

Don’t be so sure.
The bad news is Barnes is 71 in a few months. The next hire will be crucial so we don't take a giant step back. Hopefully Danny White will still be around to make that hire when the time cones

Danny White and the person he hires when Barnes retires will be the ones who decide what Rick Barnes’ long-term legacy is: simply a great coach, or a coach who laid the foundation for the men’s basketball program to be a perennial contender.
