The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

I wish someone could have followed up with Mashacks fights in practice comment and sometimes the communication was off between Barnes and the players comment but it was a super emotional state.

Anyone have any insight or inferences into this?

The sensitivity in this thread is comical. Has Barnes done a good job at Tennessee? Yes, but this is his ceiling here. I am fine with it but some of y’all act like he is a generational coach. He isn’t
I'm pushing fifty, and my generation hasn't seen Barnes' equal at UT. I'd say that makes him a "generational coach."

Yeah, but who realistically might be available who is better?

Barnes IS great but who is better and obtainable?
I guess we couldve asked that same question before Tony V was hired. Great coaches with the chops to hang banners are out there... the AD needs to find him. UT basketball is a very attractive position whether old timers like me want to believe it or not. Resources are there. When I was in school and someone wouldve told me we would win an NC IN BASEBALL... I wouldve died from laughter. Dont let the fear of taking a risk to improve stick us in the mud. Barnes is a fantastic person. No doubt. But the game has outgrown him. He is a DEFENSE first coach. And always has been. Unfortunately for us, offense sells tickets AND hangs banners.

No I saw he was coming back, but I can't lie if he changed his mind I wouldn't be a little excited to see what the future is
Odds are the future won't be as bright as it is now with Barnes. Two elite eights in two years. Two years with lots of excitement. The first final four would have been great but I'm happy Barnes is coming back and I bet anyone who's watched much Tennessee basketball feels the same.

Your ability to "keep it real" and point the rest of us in the way of proper perspective is both underrated and appreciated. We'd be lost without you.

Yes, I’ll take 30+ wins a year, an elite eight, with a punchers chance to make it to the final four every year. One year he will break through. I know, I know, he chokes every year in the postseason. But when your best player shoots four for 20 or something from three, you got no chance. Three straight trips up the court Chaz fires a three and hits the front of the rim. Coach Barnes took him out after that. Made him sit for 5+ minutes. Not sure what else you can do.
Recruit better players yes. Hope key players like Estrella don’t get hurt. Yes. Hope your 3year starting point guard plays better yes. Very frustrating day for everyone.

As one that has sat and watched Wade Houston, Jerry Greene, & others, I’m on record to say that Rick Barnes is far above the best thing that has happened to TN basketball. We need to look at the excitement and expectations we have now and complain about a 30 win season and want to replace a legend with still some good years left? Sure, we need some consistency on offense at times, but I remember Ernie, Bernie, Jackson, and we didn’t get that far in the NCAA with all that talent. Every year Barnes exceeds expectations and even this year replaced 4 starters and at times had only 8 scholarship players available for some practices and yet we win 30 games and go to the elite 8. Most all schools would love to have a coach and a prestigious program that Barnes has built and maintained.

I actually think Barnes realized he needs more offensive power.
Dalton Knecht really showed what his system needed.
He got Lanier but the others didn’t pan out offensively and we still got to E8.
The transfer portal/ NIL favors his system. Instead of a bunch of 4-5 year guys , we can get 2 year guys.

Rick Barnes is what he is. The man is a good head coach but his teams tend to come up short in games like this. He’s like the basketball version of James Franklin or Mark Richt- Quite good overall but loses a lot of the biggest games.

I don’t want him to retire or to be fired (not happening anyway) because we are still quite good. Making Elite Eights is a big deal, I’m just saying you kind of know what you’ll get from RB.

Barnes has built elite basketball programs at two football schools (not to mention his success at Clemson). The fact that Rick Barnes takes football schools with little elite basketball history and converts their basketball programs in guaranteed tournament teams that are regularly in the national title conversation is overachievement year in and year out. Rick Barnes builds teams that could actually win a national title if the stars align... something historically rare (if it happened at all) without him at Texas or Tennessee.

Barnes is much better than James Franklin or Mark Richt. Barnes has multiple conference championships. He has made more with less overall talent. Mark Richt was a guy who received 5 star talent across the board, but had 4 star results. Janes Franklin has never won his conference. He has permanently stayed in 3rd place in the BIG 10. Barnes simply hasn't won a 64 team tournament. That's it.

The March tournament is a small sample size where all sorts of weird things happen. We were one game away from the final four the second year in a row. It's silly to suggest we have an inherent flaw with how we spend, coach or recruit.
You thought that was good coaching? 🤣🤣

Somewhat better, not sure about much better. Richt probably wins a bit more without a legend in Saban coaching at Alabama. They had talent with him but not the level Bowl Cut brings in. Franklin won the Big Ten once and actually won a couple of CFP games this past season.

Barnes has a history in the NCAA Tournament going back to his Texas days. I suspect you’d see the parallels if he wasn’t coaching for Tennessee. The thing is I like him and know there aren’t many better, I just will be surprised if he gets our program to a Final Four.

So we are just gonna rewrite history and before Barnes no other coach was just as successful here?

6 times to the tourney never happened between 05 and 11? Didn’t make sweet 16 twice? Didn’t make an elite 8 in 2010? Wasnt number one in the entire country? Didn’t amass a record of 145-61? None of that happened? It was all a dream. Pearl did none of that?

Before Barnes UT was strictly an NIT team?

I’m not trying to be a jerk cause you’re a cool poster but for my own sanity am I imagining all of that happened under a different coach than Barnes here? It never happened?
