The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

I’d say the odds are in his favor.
Maybe but that would be because teams with bad offenses that are 1 and 2 seeds generally don’t stick around long enough to play teams with defenses like Houston. See St John’s this year as an example.

Edit: Lesser offenses I should say. They were 65th in offensive efficiency coming into the tournament. That’s far from bad.

I guess we couldve asked that same question before Tony V was hired. Great coaches with the chops to hang banners are out there... the AD needs to find him. UT basketball is a very attractive position whether old timers like me want to believe it or not. Resources are there. When I was in school and someone wouldve told me we would win an NC IN BASEBALL... I wouldve died from laughter. Dont let the fear of taking a risk to improve stick us in the mud. Barnes is a fantastic person. No doubt. But the game has outgrown him. He is a DEFENSE first coach. And always has been. Unfortunately for us, offense sells tickets AND hangs banners.
Tony is a unicorn. Nobody has two unicorns on campus.

We had a great defensive team this year and our roster held up against a lot of the opposition, but when you reach the elite 8 and beyond, it becomes clear that we just weren't on that level and would struggle to compete. We've got a group of scrappy, over achievers. They maxed out their potential to reach the elite 8, but unless our evals and recruiting improves/changes, that's our ceiling. Hey, that's not a bad thing. This year exceeded all my expectations. Didn't think we'd make the sweet 16 to be honest. I've been waiting for a final 4 for 7 decades. Ain't happenin'. I've accepted who and what we are in hoops and in football to be honest.

Houston just made the Final Four without touching 70 points this weekend. It’s just not true that offense matters more than defense. They both matter. FYI we were very good at both this year.

So much stupidity in this post but that’s pretty much expected coming from you.

You don’t win 30 games and get back to back E8s unless you’re a great coach.

And I don’t know why you and the other knuckle draggers continue with this dumb narrative that the game has passed him by because it’s simply not true.

We had an off game and there’s plenty to be proud of this season.

Go on with your pity party.

Pearl may have been but he never got the chance.
He screwed up his own chance.

But even if the show cause never happened I really don’t think we would’ve been his last job.

He tried to get involved with at least 3 other jobs while he was here. I think he saw us a stepping stone to something bigger.

So you're happy with just making the elite 8? That's not good enough for the Tennessee standard. Without even knowing your age, I can tell you're young. The everyone gets a trophy generation.
Just curious here. What sport did you play and for whom? Did you ever compete at any sport remotely close to this level?

Curious. What's the Tennessee "standard" in hoops? Seems like it's about the same as in football? Making the playoffs vs elite 8?

Rick Barnes is what he is. The man is a good head coach but his teams tend to come up short in games like this. He’s like the basketball version of James Franklin or Mark Richt- Quite good overall but loses a lot of the biggest games.

I don’t want him to retire or to be fired (not happening anyway) because we are still quite good. Making Elite Eights is a big deal, I’m just saying you kind of know what you’ll get from RB.

Do we? Because seems like that goal post keeps moving.

Before last year, his ceiling here was the S16. Now apparently his ceiling is the EE; which happens to be historically our program's ceiling. And he's now done that twice, something never happened more than once much less back to back.

So apparently we don't know what we're going to get. Seems like we just keep changing the defnition of what "ceiling" means.

I’ve given up on the hopeless crowd. You can’t argue with stupidity.

I suggested that I wanted to see the future yesterday that may have been harsh. Barnes is a good coach and our coach for now it's time to focus on the portal and see what he can build to get us back to this point next year

And here comes the strawmen.

Where did he say he was happy with "Just" making the Elite 8? Spoiler: he didn't. He was responding to you "just asking" if Rick was past his prime. So stop moving the goal posts. He responded to what you said.

Second what the hell is the "Tennessee standard"? Especially in basketball? Barnes has brought us more postseason success than any coach. He's setting the standard. Our baseball team won the first major national championship since the Lady Vols baskeball team in 2008. They haven't been to an Elite 8 since 2016. Football is getting back but we haven't won an NC or SEC Championship since 1998. We've yet to win a playoff game. LV basketball is tryng to get back to former glory. Softball is a consistent WS program but has been a runner up 2 times and not since 2013. What is this mytical standard you've made up in your head?

As far as the participation trophy comment, you know who is responsible for those? Boomer parents who got pissed their kids didn't get trophies. So if you are still pissed about those like it's 2000, maybe go yell at them. The kids never wanted them.

Well, with Tennessee's long line of Final Fours and historical dominance of the postseason, it's a fair gripe, right?
And he says it’s the young ones that don’t understand the Tennessee standard. Im old enough to remember when making the tournament was monumental, but Im apparently too young to remember our countless final four trips and championships. This is like a Kentucky football fan saying making the playoff isn’t up to the Kentucky standard. This is the best we’ve ever had it.

Not enough for the Tennessee standard? We had made ONE elite eight in our program’s history prior to these last two seasons. Based on the Tennessee standard, seems like Barnes is eclipsing any standard Tennessee had ever hoped to have in men’s basketball.

Plus, making an EE is hardly the equivalent of a participation trophy
