The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Not sure Pearl is a better coach, but there’s not a better coach anywhere that can motivate players like Pearl.Indiana is crazy if they don’t try to lure him to the Hoosier state.
Sad part, living here about 30 mins from Bloomington, Pearl isn't even being mentioned.
Folks around here are really, really high on Otzelberger, Buzz Williams, and Dusty May.

IMO - Pearl would absolutely crush it in the Big Ten.

Pearl burned some bridges pretty badly when he was an assistant at Iowa. I'm not sure the Big 10 would be a place he would want to coach

I’m one for a change. I like Barnes but his system without shooters can’t work.
Thanks for the easy ignore selection
Thanks Freak.
I'll start with my two cents...
I absolutely love CRB and what he's done for Tennessee, but the bill of goods we bought from Texas has proven true.

Great recruiter, good coach, teams excel during the season, doesn't go very deep in the tournaments.

Do we accept that and let him coach here as long as he maintains the current standard?
Or is it time to consider the next coach?

How did that work out for Texas????

Oh yeah, I had forgot about the alleged taped phone conversation where he asked an assistant on another Big Ten team if they had offered a blue chip cars and cash to come play, which opened up an investigation and findings of other, credible violations and NCAA penalties against Illinois.

Lots of people in this part of Indiana recall the outstanding job Pearl did at Southern Indiana though, which is even more strange that he isn't mentioned in the pool of candidates for the IU job.

I think enough time has passed that it wouldn't be that much of an issue. My take was based solely on his preference. I think he loves the SEC. I don't there is any question he would return here humbly and easily, but it's not happening

Who is ultimately responsible for us not having shooters
We have recruited players who have a history of being able to shoot the basketball. Sometimes it is not the act of having the ability toy go shoot the ball, rather it is a combination of events which precedes the shot. Has another player efficiently set a screen which allows the shooter to be able to get the shot off. Another is did another player able to hit a shooter with passes which allows the shooter to get a balanced shot off. Often, the defense is able to beat the screen or block a shot after it has been released by the shooter. Sometimes it is players are unable to get balanced shot off because the shot clock is running out. All of this is to say there are a number of factors which causes a shooter to miss shots. We have players who can shoot the ball with accuracy , but sometimes old lady luck makes a shooter look good or bad. I know that sometimes a player gets into a “zone” when regardless of what happens around him/her, will make almost every shot he or she shoots. This also applies to when shooters can not the broad side of a barn.

we need tall wings that can shoot like 6'7, 6'8 guys with great defensive skills as well. Kind of like Brea and Robinson for Kentucky
We aren’t going to be able to get the level of talent they get. It’s like expecting Kentucky to recruit with us in football. Just never going to happen.

No. There's a much smaller gap in basketball vs. football. Much more disparity in talent for them in football than we have in basketball.

Kentucky recruits itself in basketball.

Pope will have no issue getting talent as long as he’s there.

Barnes is a great coach but he’s not going to out recruit Kentucky.

I agree, but we attract far better players as a basketball team than they do as a football team. Our basketball program is miles more accomplished than their football program

So how realisticly close are we to Barnes actually retiring? I know the word is that he only wants to coach if his teams can legitimately compete, but I'm just having a hard time imagining him retiring after this season, regardless of what happens. Let's say hypothetically in a worst case scenario that we wind up finishing in the middle 3rd of the SEC and don't make it out of the NCAA opening weekend - what do we think Barnes will do in that case? Imho, something like that would have to happen for Barnes to seriously consider it. Would a big transfer or surprise commit possibly change things? Of course, I may be way off base here.

I almost have to think he wouldn't mind seeing Cade and Estrella develop together. They could be a lethal inside presence. Of course I'm speculating here. We have a real shot at the stud PG. If Barnes sticks around for a few more years, he'll get good players here. Always has

Totally disagree about Barnes being a great recruiter. I think he is a great coach and an average recruiter. I love Barnes. But it’s becoming apparent that his offensive style is not gonna get it done. That’s not a knock on him. It’s just a Father Time thing.

We need a new offensive system. The Barnes defensive ball system is not working. In today’s college basketball offense wins just like in football. And Barnes needs to step his HS recruiting game up.
