The Official Tennessee Titans thread IV

Epic fail by the Ravens and more dramatic than it had to be mostly because no td after a int and a Mariota int which Black birds took advantage by scoring 7.

Still great the Titans won vs the tenacious black birds in a decent close game.
A major win because the Jags won easily vs the Bengals so a decent afc south division.

This. No clue. Our point differential is -12. The only other team with a winning record and a negative differential is miami.

The Texans game skews the statistics some. It's not often we lose by 43 points (It's bad enough it happened once).

True, but that Houston loss definitely skews our differential.

It randomly reminds me of this one year back in the early 2000s when Green Bay was like 2-9 but somehow managed to have a positive scoring differential. Think their 2 wins were by like a combined legit 100 points.

But I do agree with you guys. I’ve no idea what to make of this team. After the Seattle game I thought we were a bonafide playoff team, but this has been the most underwhelming 3 game winning streak I can remember. Mariota was pretty decent today overall, but he’s still having a ton of head scratching moments. It’s almost like the sophomore slump came a year late for he and Winston both.

I always say a win is a win and I think it especially holds true in the NFL. The Titans are a prime example of that. They beat the brakes off a decent Seattle team then in a week or two turn around and get skull dragged against Houston. In college you know just about week to week what to expect, in the NFL you really don’t.

Agreed. I do think Mularkey is slowly changing the culture here in Tennessee which is a good thing and its not always going to be pretty. I think you can see evidence of that in 4 of our wins this season:

Seattle - Good team with a great coach and we dominated them
Indy - Played sloppy and found a way to come back and win big in the 2nd half
Cleveland - Played down to our opponent but dug deep and managed to pull our a victory
Baltimore - We more or less dominated the game (outside of the score board) but let them get back into it. In the end we managed to find the resolve to win.

I guarantee we wouldn't have won those 4 games in the last few years and probably not even last year to be honest. Those wins may look ugly but at least they are in the win column and the team can learn from those which will help us later on. The biggest thing the coaching staff needs to do is focus in on beating Jacksonville in eight weeks and the division should be ours. Once the season is over I agree we probably should fire Robiskie and get someone a little more qualified in there.

I’m of two minds.

I don’t think winning close games is necessarily an ability. I think in a game as random as football, one score games often come down to luck. You look at last year’s Volunteers, and they won a bunch of close games as opposed to the year before they lost a bunch of them. I am not sure if all of a sudden the vols developed a new “close game” skill.

On the other hand

I think that titan teams in the past would have found a way to lose those games.

Last year we definitely lose to Indy and Seattle IMO. I think the way we are winning is a product of the team mentality and lack of consistency with the offense. They just don’t know how to quite put a team away just yet, on a consistent basis. The offense can be dynamite when it wants to be, that last TD drive against Baltimore said as much to me. They decided to sack up and put it in the end zone because they had to.

He division has basically been handed to us IMO. They just have to win the games they should, there’s not many left, if any, they shouldn’t and finish.

I agree with this as well. I think I’m close games as long as you have talent on the field that’s important but what wins you those games is on the sideline with the headset. There’s certain teams you watch on every level and sport that if the game is close you just know they are gonna find a way to win late.

A few things I noticed in the game Sunday.

If the Titans want to take the next step then I think they are going to have to rethink there offensive philosophy. Mariota has shown that he is a fairly accurate passer and with a group of pretty good receivers with Matthews, Decker and now Davis along with Taylor. IMO they need to put the ball in the air more. On more than one drive that stalled Sunday they were moving the ball through the air easily and then they try a run and end up getting in 2nd & 3rd and long. Look pass on 1st & 2nd to get you in 3rd and short than running for 1 or 2 on 1st and putting you in 2nd & 3rd and long.

Also you have a 240lb monster at running back get him the ball more. It's seems like Murray refuses to come out of the game because he is afraid that Henry might do something good. There was two or three times where Murray should have been took out of the game the ref even stopped and asked if he was okay at one time in the game.

Finally Adoree Jackson needs to touch the ball on offense 6 to 10 times a game. He was a shoestring tackle away from housing that one carry Sunday. I like that Byard has those INTs but the thought keeps coming to my mind of how many TDs could Adoree have had if he had been the one to gather them in? The guy is amazing with the ball in his hands. They need to try and get him more touches in the backfield maybe some screens or get him in the slot and matched up on a LB or Safety. IMO

What blows my mind is how how hard our redzone offense has hit the deck this season. We were #1 last year. I think they said we've fallen to either 30th or 31st this year. I mean what the actual F?

I think part of that is play calling and the other is Mariota missing time.

I would say play calling more than Mariota missing time. Both have an effect but play calling is awful. You got guys like Murray and Henry in your back field, no reason you should hit pay dirt more times than not when you get in the red zone.

Anyone think Murray could be traded in the offseason? I see the chances rising each week. I’d take a 1st or 2nd round for him.
