The Official Tennessee Titans thread IV

Man I really hope we can finish with 11+ wins. Given our defensive woes this season, it would really speak volumes to how well this offense has played.

Well the Ravens won, and they have a very easy schedule to finish the season, so we may have to win 2 to make it. Doesn’t help that the Steelers basically have the division locked up and may not have much to play for against the Colts.

That was a heck of a game tonight!

Playoff scenarios this week

1. Titans win, Ravens loss vs Jags
2. Titans win + Raiders loss or tie to Chargers, Miami loss to New England, Cleveland win or tie against Giants
3. Titans win + Raiders tie or loss, Miami loss, Titans or Browns clinch strength of victory tie breaker over Miami

In other words we’re not getting any help. Win 2 of these last 3 and we should be good... I think.

Well part one is now complete with the Chargers winning. Cleveland should beat the Giants but New England beating Miami is iffy. I also hope Stafford doesn’t play for the Lions this Sunday either.

Question for Titans fans.

I'm sure a lot of you saw TNF last night. Mariota came in for Carr after the groin injury and he looked pretty good. The hot take is that Mariota is actually the Bee's Knees. Theres Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers (maybe?), and Marcus Mariota. I'm avoiding that.

Its obvious that the Titans turned it up a notch when they moved on from Mariota. (I was blaming Smith for Mariota's failure, but Tannehill made that argument look kind of silly.)

So the question is, why? Did the Titans completely change up their offense when the switched QBs? Is Tannehill just better? Did they begin to lean more heavily on Henry and the run game? Is Mariota actually an above average starting NFL QB who just needed a new start somewhere? I know its only one game and all, but... If Gruden - who's playoff chances aren't mathematically nil but still basically dead-in-the-water - decided to test out Mariota for the rest of the sesaon, is that just a waste of time?

I watch the Titans occasionally but I live in Oklahoma so I don't get most of their games.

There’s a few reasons things didn’t work out looking back on it. Mariota wasn’t a great fit for our offense, constant coaching upheaval hindered his progression, and he suffered from injuries quite a bit. The offense Oakland was running last night seemed to be a great fit for him. It featured a lot of read option and allowed him to make plays on his own. Mariota is who he is at this point, a QB with elite athleticism that’s at his best when he’s able to get the ball out quickly. However, he’ll always have average arm strength by NFL standards and struggle with accuracy from time to time, but will also make phenomenal throws on occasion, like his first touchdown toss last night. His pocket presence leaves something to be desired as well. I don’t know if I can say he’s better than Carr or not, they’re completely different QB’s. It just depends on which skill set you see as more desirable.

With all of that being said, Mariota will always be one of my favorite players of all time, and I do believe he has the talent to start somewhere. Whether it’s with the Raiders or someone else, I hope he gets the chance.

Mariota played well at times as a Titan. When he is on, he can be really good. Still can't throw a deep ball, but otherwise really good. I'm not surprised he played well last night. The thing with his is he can't play like that consistently.

MM looked the same to me. He doesn't read coverages well and processes what he sees too slowly. He is fine for a back-up or a bottom feeder team that will use his athleticism. Good person and wish him well in life.

There is no doubt that King Henry, Tannehill and Brown will keep the Titans in the thick of things with hope for the future. Build around them with pieces and our Titans will do well long term. Very encouraged with the overall direction and style of play for the team.

Looks like they are getting some starters back and healthier for tomorrow. Hope they can hold out Saffold to give him another week to heel his turf toe. Adoree' is still borderline ready. Just keep winning and let the chips fall where they may with the playoffs seeding.

Talent has never been an issue. Dude had a 10-12 game stretch in 2016 during which he looked like he was well on his way to being elite. Really his first two seasons as a whole were very promising. We certainly did him very few favors with the coaching carousel while he was here, but still, consistency was a big issue from 2017 on, and he has always struggled to stay healthy.

I said when he left, might've even been in this very thread, I wouldn't be surprised if he flourishes if paired with the right coach in the right system. I mean hell, we've basically done that exact thing here with Tannehill, and I still think it's possible for Mariota.
