Yep. Everything you said. I know the deck is really stacked in favor of the Vols, but if we're being honest, we shouldn't have won that game last night. Credit to UT for fighting and bringing it home tho. I really hope Clemson gets popped today at noon. Even with their pitching being burned, I don't know that I want to play those guys again at 6. I still remember what aTm's alleged terrible pitching did. Everything screams UT winning this regional. Still, there's something in me that has me feeling more than a little leery about seeing that Clemson team again.Kind of hard to overstate the importance and quality of that win. Clemson is coming off 17 straight wins. Grice has only lost to Wake Forest, in April. He threw the best eight innings I’ve seen this year. He was the best player on the field even after he moved to 1st. We beat a team that many analysts picked as a top contender to win the CWS. Our defensive play and defensive decision-making was the best of the season. It was a very well-coached game, and the confidence in pitching changes was very solid. Our bats were better than stats show. We had a lot of good contact that didn’t pay off, and often with men on base. Great performances from the mound. My only criticism is that Dolly has a very predictable scout when his pitch count gets over 80. That bad inning was avoidable. We have to be a step ahead of the scout. The clutch hitting from Zane with two outs was a life moment for him, and a serious confidence builder for the team. Our pen’s pitching, and our pitch calls were A+. That was a program defining win. That said, Clemson is still in. Stats favor us based on pitching and rest, but they are a very strong team. Hats off to Grice who may be the best all around player I’ve seen this year. I hope we can keep our composure and continue to play good situational opponent strategy. That game last night was one for the ages. Let’s hope we don’t take anyone lightly. The lesson of Notre Dame last year is a good one. Mature teams know how to keep the pressure on without losing composure. We did that last night beyond any expectation. Let’s win and get to play at home again.
Wife said a Clemson pitcher was ejected for saying something to Vols when coming off the field in one of those late innings. I missed it. Anybody got the details?
May need to go with Charlie Taylor today. Thoughts?Hat tip to STARK because think how long he was out there throwing the ball back to the many pitchers plus just having the ball in his hand so often and for so long makes catcher the most important position imo (and most ball players opinions). Buster Posey was probably the best at it in the past 20 years college or pro.
Kind of hard to overstate the importance and quality of that win.
I was telling my fiancé about how big of a role Ethan Payne played last night. Not much playing experience, to sit all night, come in cold, lay down 2 PERFECT sac bunts and hold down 1B defensively….I was beyond impressed. This whole post is money, but this part x 1000. Say what you want about road losses — I’d gladly have gone winless on the road all season if we could just get that one. And Burns — to go walk/HBP to load the bases with nobody out in a walk-off situation, and then somehow dig out of it and go 99 pitches (or whatever it was)… and Halvorsen… just incredible. Denton, Payne… awesome game. Huge.
Is this a sloping warning track ? What is the purpose? From the highlights, it looks like 2 fielders fell because of it.
